SWV - You’re Always On My Mind

The last time we posted directly about Ginnels was in 2015! Mark Chester has been quiet on the release front for nearly the past decade, but get ready for "The Picturesque" in early February 2025, courtesty Spanish label Tenorio Cotobade.
"Lands Faraway" is the default song, which has a great indie pop sound - and doesn't veer into unexpected areas like many great Ginnels songs. Even Mark Chester's melodies sound more traditionally indie pop. The other two songs, while still a little less rocking than earlier Ginnels work, do retain much of the quirky pop arrangements and melodies of the band's earlier work.
It's funny, the two other times this blog directly posted about Ginnels there were no band comps. However, other bands like Lelee and Women's Christmas garnered comparisons. And on this release I will say there is a definite Pavement and Beachwood Sparks vibe going on. Mark Chester was also a member of No Monster Club.

Was there anything worse than having to attend a sub-par school with a bunch of sub-par losers? No. The only thing that even made school bearable was the other Ashley’s. And the fact that Swynlake Secondary was so full of drama and it fueled not only her gossip blog but also her need for vengeance. Some of the people that featured on GG were literally the worst and deserved to have their lives and/or relationships ruined.
But the bell had rung and she was finally free of that place. Which meant coffee at Hatters with one of her best girls.
She hooked arms with Ashlee as they met up at their usual locker spot and rested her head on her shoulder. “Let’s get out of here, ma petite ballerine,” she groaned pathetically as they pushed their way through the after school crowd. “I am in desperate need for caffeine. And an unofficial gossip sesh.”
