Tonight's cocktail. I'm calling it The Nevada Sunset. Float the lemon liqueur on top of the raspberry liqueur, and then float the bourbon on top. I suggest @bulleitwhiskey I haven't found anything I like more. #bulleitbourbon #10yearagedbourbon #pallini #lemonliqueur #raspberryliqueur #nevada #sunset #cocktails https://www.instagram.com/p/Bs4eMzwn9QL/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=zqwyg55ggm7
So Friday was a day with my people... the ones of broadcast television. But as daylight slipped away, my friday experience turned out to be far from over. Here’s what happened next:
As soon as I got home from the UW Video Holiday Party, Kimmer had our friend Susan’s Rialta RV fired up in the driveway, ready for a requested pick-up in downtown Seattle of a pair of college freshmen headed home for the holidays.
By the time we snatch Linzy and her friend/co-writer Eli from Cornish Commons and slip the Rialta back into our driveway, we’re looking at 9:30 at night with awfully empty tummies.
We’d both just received Christmas bonuses, however, and felt as though a proper dinner in celebration was in order.
Macaroni Grill’s at the top of our list for such occasions, so we jump into Kimmer’s green bug and set off for the mall, walking through the front doors right around 10 and setting our sights directly on a pair of seats around the fire pit.
Our seats.
There’s another couple seated around the fire, caught up in their own cozy evening while we order some appetizers and wine, settling into ours.
Not long after, a trio of men in their late 20s/early 30s take their seats by the fire. They’re hockey dads at the end of a great day with a lot of energy to blow off. Loud conversation, laughter... they’re having a good time.
Now, we’ve been around kids and teens most of our lives... so, when it comes to creating our own bubble in the midst of chaos, we can do it. Two cozy evenings and one celebration around the fire pit. It’s all good.
At some point, the woman to our right’s sitting alone as her date’s stepped out for a moment. A conversation ensues between her and the young men.
Turns out she’s seen “The Last Jedi” and they haven’t. They wanna know, though, how it was without any spoilers. So she says
“Darth Vader comes back.”
Pandemonium ensues.
Of course she’s joking. Successfully playing all three men beautifully.
When her date returns, the three offer to buy us all shots in recognition of how loud their celebrating’s been and what good sports we are.
Limoncello shots is what they’re offering.
The other couple accepts immediately. Kimmer, though, passes, so I flash the waiter a peace sign, indicating I’ll take both of ours. Which has everyone laughing whilst my wife tries to figure out what I just did.
The drinks come... and she magnanimously decides to actually have one of them. And they. are.
Lovely.
These are perfect sippin’ drinks for a cold night cozied around the fire. The drink is, if I haven’t pointed it out yet, a Limoncello liqueur. Officially, it’s called a Limoncello Valoroso Martinili conjured from limoncello, cointreau, fresh lemonade, and valoroso rosso.
Once we’re all settled with Limoncello. The men ask for a toast, and the gentleman to our right provides something appropriately hockey-worthy. Then, we all clink our glasses together, completing the ritual, and everybody downs their shots.
Except us. Still sippin’ away.
It’s an age thing, I’m guessing. For the young, it’s about the celebration. Shots!
For us, it’s about a lovely moment. And sippin’ it in.
It was an odd collection of strangers around the fire one cold, Friday night, I’ll give you that.
But we all left the table in good spirits, having enjoyed the pleasure of each other’s company...
Over glasses of lemon liqueur.
How to make #Limoncello - We learned this recipe after a trip in the South of Italy, in fact this liqueur is mainly produced around the Amalfi Coast and the Sorrento Peninsula. In this warm and sunny area, these fruits grow with an attractive yellow skin, very fragrant and with a particularly juicy and acidic flesh. You can buy them in each corner or market of the Neapolitan region. "Nonna Maria", Emanuele's Grandma, helped us with the research of all the ingredients and taught us the simple secrets to follow to give you the best fragrancy as possible. Limoncello is a masterpiece for Italians after dinner, a shot in good company around a family table or with friends help to digest as well to give a twist to your conversation. The most important thing to obtain the best homemade Limoncello is using raw lemons, the peel must be untreated so make sure to buy these in organic markets to have the most flavored zest.
