When I was a kid growing up in Detroit, I didn't have a normal life like some... my dad owned his own business and it was family ran. The day would start by waking and going to school with my Dad getting me a egg mcMuffin (hated them, but ate anyways) before dropping me off. The end of school would mean heading to my families stores on Gratiot and Mack (across from the 7th precinct) and helping out with the work at my moms party store and selling balloons outside my dads store. When the wkend came, that meant we pack up the station wagon and head to the riverfront and setup during the festivals in the lot across from the city county building selling cassette tapes and posters of the popular acts in the 80s ..... that meant it was my job to sell the posters and hustle! Now .... THIS ISNT ME COMPLAINING!! On the contrary, I'm actually thankful that I grew up with the teachings of that I must be my own self and my own boss. Dad instilled that treat people right and love those who don't! I'm blessed and really lucky to have a man that loved me even when I was a homeless drunk no matter what! I miss him and this photo which was taken by the legendary Leni Sinclair reminded me of even at a young age ... I was on my grind!!
