For all the controversy greeted upon Goodman’s and Adams’ opera The Death of Klinghoffer upon its premiere in 1991 and again in 2014 during its first production at the New York Met, I keep coming back to the final lines of Marilyn’s aria that closes the opera.
The dying, cancer-ridden Marilyn’s anger at the irony of her husband’s murder strikes me every time I listen to it. She’s reached an immediate acceptance to the horrific situation, but she refuses to be consoled since consolation is forgiveness. And it’s too late to earn that since Leon is dead and they didn’t let her take her take his place.

The Metropolitan Opera will be performing an opera based on the murder of wheelchair bound Jewish American businessman Leon Klinghoffer at the hands of Palestinian terrorists. An opera that humanizes terrorism is bad enough but performing it in the murder victim’s hometown seems deliberately offensive. The performance will not occur without protest though.
