SECOND ELT SYMPOSIUM When I started at high scool, I wanted to English teacher. I have been student at Okan Unıversıty ELT for 3 semester. My third year at my school , and I learned a lot of things. I am learning ‘’ How Teach English ‘’. On Wednesday we attended Second ELT Symposium. There were two lecturer that Tony Gurr and Leo Wood. First lecturer was Leo Wood. He was talking about cultural diffirences effect of reading. He said ‘’ Sociaculturel presupposition are everywhere.’’ He gave the example of this topic. The example was about Simit Sarayı. Okan Unıversity send him e mail ; University said : how get the of Okan University. University told him to he had to go Simit Sarayi in Kadikoy. University forgot one point he foreigner in Turkey and he did not know anywhere in Turkey. I think if you want to ELT firstly you should learn culture of your student. When I give reading text to my student I think I must know their culture beacuse my student learn the text easy way. Second lecturer was Tony Gurr. He was talking about skills. He said learning skills importat than grammar skills of teach reading. Tony gave the example Jemery Harmer book. The example was about reading principle ; 1) encourage student to read as often and as mush as possible 2) student need to be engaged with what they are reading. 3) encpurage students to respond to the content of a text, not just concerate on it is construction. 4) prediction is a major factor in reading. 5) match the tast to the topic whne using intensive reading texts. 6) good teachers exploit reading texts to the full. ( Hammer J. , How To Teach English, 2007, Page 101-102 ) Finally, if I want to good teacher I learn student culture and their skills.
