Summary:
“I would like to learn how to make a betrothal necklace.”
Hakoda nearly drops his fishing pole in surprise. Under normal circumstances, this would be a cause for celebration. He would take the lures out of Zuko’s hands and wrap him in a tight embrace.
But under normal circumstances, he would know which of his children Zuko wants to propose to.
hi bestie okay so i rewatched all of lok season four in the past twenty four hours and i also reread several chapters of complicated do you uhhh have more wuko fic recs for me <3
reporting for duty 🫡
i’ll start off first of course by linking complicated, in case anyone who follows me still doesn’t know that this is one of THE fics of all time. but beware you WILL come out of it a full wuko believer. jo is proof.
part 2 of complicated (a mid fic wu pov snippet)
part 3 of complicated which takes place after complicated, which i have never read??? it came out only a few months ago?? brb

the art of wu(ing) which is part 2 of a zukka fic, which lowkey made me at least appreciate zukka from a distance, which led me to read blue and then we were done lol. basically you can thank this fic for me even being part of zukka nation

i’m feeling good (like i never should)
negative space

mako and the terrible, awful, no-good, very bad road trip - i have been waiting for this one to get completed before i read the whole thing but i might cave

@bisexuallsokka I had another idea I couldn't let go of for this one lol
For this prompt game! (And also this one!)
“And that,” Sokka finishes, aware of just how flimsy it all is, how few options they truly have left, “That’s the plan.”
Zuko stares a moment, face grave and dirt smudged and serious before he exhales a slow breath, nodding, a grim kind of understanding settling over him.
“Risky,” Toph grunts, restlessly tossing a pebble back and forth. “Just waiting for them to surround us?”
It is, but given their options, given that they’re down to three, given that they’re facing so many more than that…Sokka takes a deep breath. “Do you trust me?”
“Always,” Zuko says, immediate.
“Getting us this far?” Toph waves generally around what might be the little hovel they’ve gone to ground in, or maybe just this point in the fight. “You earned it.”
“Alright then,” Sokka says, forcing himself to exhale normally like it isn’t a relief to hear. “Then this is the plan.”
“Alright then,” Toph nods after a moment, squaring her shoulders. “I’m ready.”
“Are you ready?” Zuko asks, pitching his voice low as Sokka starts getting the last of their supplies ready.
Sokka watches his hands moving through the weapons check, distantly impressed by their steadiness. “You already know how this will end, Zuko.”
“I know,” Zuko agrees quietly after a beat. leaving unspoken the fact that they all do. That all they’re doing refusing to go down without a fight.
“We’re not going to make it out of this one,” Sokka whispers, closing his eyes as he lets the reality of that sweep through him.
“I know,” Zuko says again, taking a breath. “And if this is the last battle—” he touches Sokka’s hand, stilling it against their supplies. “—it has been the honor of my life,” he says steadily, “Fighting it at your side.”
“Zuko,” Sokka chokes, unprepared for the sudden rush of emotion through his battle calm, fumbling for Zuko’s hand.
“I couldn’t ask for anything more than this,” Zuko continues, squeezing back.
“I should be able to do better,” Sokka whispers, wincing at the admission. “I would be able to get us out of this. It shouldn’t just be about trying to buy time, we could have beaten them, I know it, I just—"
“Hey, hey,” Zuko interrupts, shifting to catch Sokka’s eyes. “You did the best you could,” he says, firm and serious, a welt beginning to purple into a bruise against his temple and fuck, Sokka can suddenly feel every bit of soreness of his body, every aching muscle. “We all did. You can’t think your way out of everything.”
“This, though—”
“No one could have seen this coming,” Zuko cuts in again, firm. “No one, okay?”
“We knew going into this Azula was going to be a wild card—”
“And we overprepared for her,” Zuko shrugs, brutal and blunt in his practicality. “And we can’t undo it now. But,” he adds, voice gentling, eyes searching Sokka’s face. “We can still remember what we’re here for, right?”
Sokka huffs, almost a laugh. “It’s not like I could forget, I’ve been planning it for months.”
“It’s worth it,” Sokka agrees after a beat, exhaling hard, gathering his resolve back around himself and setting aside his own hopes and wants because today, this whole thing, it was never about him, not really.
“Together, okay?” Zuko says, lips quirking into a little smile. “We do this together.”
“In together, out together,” Sokka repeats back, their mantra.
“Exactly,” Zuko says, kissing him once, fierce and hard, leaning his forehead against Sokka’s as he pulls away. “Ready?”
“No,” Sokka says honestly. He doesn’t know if he’ll ever be, for this, but Zuko laughs and kisses him again, that electric, adrenaline-high intensity of his clearly starting to take over now that he has a direction to point it in, and Toph shifts, head cocking.
“I don’t think,” she says at the unmistakable sound of a footstep crunching over the dry leaves Sokka spread behind to give them the thinnest attempt at a warning, “That they’re going to wait.”
“All together, then,” Sokka says, settling his weapon into his hands. “All the way to the end.”
“Exactly,” Zuko says, gripping his own weapon and holding Sokka’s eyes, steady and even. “Count us down?”
“Toph should do it.” Since she’s the lynchpin of it all.
Toph shifts into a crouch, dirt smudged and serious as she readies herself. “Blaze of glory, right?”
Sokka lets out a breath, anticipation beginning to flutter in his chest. “That’s the idea.”
Toph nods. “For all the melons, then,” she says, Zuko huffing out a startled little laugh that she doesn’t even pause to smirk for. “On three. One, two—”
The three of them burst from their cover before three, because they all know anyone could be listening. They hurl themselves into the afternoon light, Sokka and Zuko screaming and making themselves as big as possible as they do it, relying on the element of surprise to get a few shots off and trying to draw their time out a little longer.
Sokka shrieks as loud as he can and provides as much cover fire as possible, zigging and zagging and screaming louder as he watches Zuko go down, struck in the back, the sharp burst of a paintball hitting his own back a few moments later as Toph mows through their collective ammo—
“I AM THE MELON LORD!”
--at anything in front of her.
“YOU’LL NEVER DEFEAT ME!”
“For the Melon Lord,” Sokka calls weakly back, gasping through the sting of it—fuck, but these protective jumpsuits are a joke—before rolling toward Zuko. “Think we beat Jet’s time?”
“Watch it, Melon Lord,” Zuko huffs, ducking down as a wayward scatter of shots spatter in front of him before scooting back toward Sokka, both of them huddling down to watch as Toph mows down Katara and Aang, spinning so unpredictably that Suki has to actually work to line up her shot—Suki laughing so hard she has to work even harder—just as they planned it.
“Well fuck,” Zuko says, glancing down at his watch and tilting his wrist so Sokka can see the timer ticking up as Toph finally goes down.
“IT’S MY BIRTHDAY AND I WILL HAVE MY VENGEANCE!”
“Shit,” Sokka echoes, grabbing Zuko’s wrist to double-check the counter and grinning up at him. “I think we did it.”
"NEXT ROUND IS OURS FUCKERS!"
“I think,” Zuko says, a slow, wild-edged grin growing over his face, “That we got close enough that we can say it, either way.”
you know i think the funniest thing about this ask is that the moments i’m about to mention are things that non-divorced zukka fans don’t even know about or understand but divorced zukka fans not only know about it and understand it but they either Saw the scene in their brain or Read the scene in a brain fic. we’re all connected to have the same visions
1. the failed proposal. everybody loves it when the person that’s never stayed for anyone stays for Someone and then that someone leaves. everybody loves that
2. umm umm when sokka came back to the fire nation thinking the assassination attempts were on zuko but they were on izumi??? and this changed everything cause even if he was terrified that anything would happen to zuko, he knew zuko could handle himself but this was izumi and he knew she was his weakness and he knew zuko couldn’t handle this on his own so then he just??? stays??? refuses to leave him on this??? wtf
3. mid divorce hookups okay you won me over jo. i think it’s funny. but even then i feel like they don’t Know exactly how the other feels like you’re alone and I’m alone….lets not think about this at all
4. that one time sokka almost died for zuko and izumi and zuko thought sokka was gonna die thinking that zuko didn’t love him? and then he wakes up and zuko gets his chance to do so and they realize that just like this assassination attempt, a hundred more could come and there will never be a right time but they only have one life to spend together and if they keep waiting for things to get easier and for the circumstances to be just right, nothing will ever happen. and despite fearing what people will think, despite knowing the assassination attempts will be more and more frequent, despite despite despite they still do it.
5. sokka death scene amv lmaooo get dunked on loser. this time around, he does die sacrificing himself for zuko and korra. this time, there’s no second chance for him and zuko holds him and tries to save him but they both know it’s too much for him to make it past this and sokka tries to calm zuko down even if he himself is terrified because what about katara, what about izumi, what about zuko, who’s going to take care of his family when he’s gone when it’s all he’s ever done? and they both wish they could have had more time but they know whatever they had left was spent just right. and then he serves and he dies lmao.
hi kit! could you do “you bought me flowers?” with zukka for the writing prompts? :D
hi kit! could you do “you bought me flowers?” with zukka for the writing prompts? :D
Jo, my beloved, I am vibrating thank you so much! I’m so excited to write zukka again!!! 💖
This is a modern au (I’m such a sucker for these) where Sokka is a poetry professor and Zuko is a thespian. It’s in the same universe as physical touch and words of affirmation, which is a zukka one-shot
I apologize for this being late, life’s been keeping me busy.
Dialogue prompt: “you bought me flowers?”
you’re a sunflower
Sokka cleared his throat while holding up his phone. The young professor was face-timing his sister about what chaotically romantic thing he decided to do for his husband, “I don’t know, Sokka. Don’t sunflowers need sun? It’s right in their name, after all, you can’t just keep one mounted on your living room wall. It needs to grow.” The long-haired brunette pointed out.
The older sibling scoffed and glared at the screen, “Hey, I don’t knock any of your ideas when you’re trying to do something romantic for Aang! Plus, it’s not real!” The older brunette argued while flapping his hands about, clearly annoyed.
Katara snickered, “I knew that Sokka, I just think this is a stupid idea. Why don’t you get him a real bouquet of sunflowers? Mai and Ty Lee have that garden. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to give you a few flowers to make your husband happy.” She suggested with a raised brow, knowing fully well she was right.
The twenty-seven-year-old's eyes brightened at the mention of his friends, “Oh yeah, I forgot about their garden! I really should catch up with our friends more.” The man pondered, head tilting up, before his eyes wandered back to the phone screen, “Thanks, Katara! I’ll text you what I got later! Bye!” He rushed before hanging up the call, but not before Katara quickly said goodbye.
The tan-skinned man quickly ran out the door with his car keys, excitement taking over him at the thought of buying some real flowers for the blooming love for his husband.
~~~
Zuko walked through the door of his and his husband’s apartment, “Jeez, this play is gonna be exhausting!” The twenty-six-year-old sighed loudly before plopping down on the couch, ready to turn in for the night.
Sokka walked into the living room, “Hey, baby,” he greeted before scanning his face, “Another tough rehearsal? They gotta stop working you all so hard. It's a month out for goodness sake!” The professor rambled, throwing his hands up in the process.
The raven-haired twenty-six-year-old sighed before reaching up to take his husband's hand, “Babe, It's okay. I'm the one who signed up for it. If I knew I couldn't handle it I wouldn't have auditioned in the first place.” The young man replied calmly, trying to get his husband to do the same, “Come sit beside me, love. All I want right now is to cuddle.” He rasped sleepily.
Sokka squeezed Zuko's hand before sitting down, resting his head on his lover's soft-robed chest, “Thank you, Zuko.” He smiled softly before closing his eyes, ready to drift off to sleep.
Zuko started to run his fingers through Sokka's hair before the man's eyes shot open, “Oh, right! My Sunflower, I have a gift for you.” The brunette exclaimed before giving his husband a quick kiss on the cheek.
The twenty-six-year-old hummed, “If there's more kisses involved, I'm not complaining one bit.” He smiled softly while brushing a strand of hair out of Sokka's eyes.
The professor gave him a sheepish smile, “I guess that could be part of your present, but I gotcha somethin’ else.” He gave Zuko a quick kiss before slowly getting up, “Be right back, baby.” The brunette smiled, lighting up the whole room before he left.
Zuko smiled dreamily at the spot his husband was on before closing his eyes, head lulling on the back of the couch, “Baby why’d you leave, I was so comfy.” The raven-haired young man whined.
The twenty-seven-year-old chuckled, “I'll be there in a minute, babe. Just gotta find it first.”
A few seconds later, Zuko heard his husband's ‘Aha,’ before walking back into the living room, holding a bouquet of sunflowers, “I got these from Mai and Ty Lee and they said to tell you hi.” He grinned, seeing Zuko's face light up.
“You bought me flowers? Moonlight, these are beautiful!” The twenty-six-year-old gasped while slowly taking the bouquet, “The most romantic bouquet I've ever gotten.” He beamed before jumping up from the couch and hugging Sokka, “I love you so much, agi.” Zuko smiled softly while resting his forehead on Sokka’s.
The brunette closed his eyes while wrapping his arms around the younger man’s waist, “I love you too, nagligivaget.” He breathed out, all the anger he felt melting away as he felt his husband’s cool skin.
Suddenly, Sokka felt a soft kiss on his forehead, “Thank you, my love. I’ll never forget this.”
The twenty-seven-year-old looked at Zuko with puppy-dog eyes, “And I’ll never forget that.” He said softly as the two shared a sweet kiss.
