thinking about how javert doesn't allow himself vices— except he does. of course there's his snuff habit, but there's also things he doesn't think of as vices. he lets himself enjoy the chase. he likes to make a sarcastic remark. he relishes the idea of surprising people with his successes. but his biggest indulgence is authority. he allows himself the comfort of not thinking, of following orders.

to javert, there is nothing like being the hound that gets rewarded for its unconditional obedience. not wine, not women, not friends— nothing compares to that feeling of safety, of usefulness, and the knowledge that the hierarchy his life is built upon is stable.

how could he live without this?

how can the dog live once it realizes the hand that feeds would just as soon let it starve?

to be fair to javert he was also dealing with menopause throughout all that

javert would have a black and silver german shepherd fursona and he would start out commissioning realistic fursuits but he'd eventually learn to make them and he gets super complex with it and he makes different clothes for it too. valjean has a super cute blue and orange/cream stoat fursona and he has a commissioned fursuit thats really cartoony and adorable and javert hates it (he thinks unrealistic animal colors are cheating and thinks really stylized fursuits are stupid) and he keeps making forum posts about how corny valjean is and how hes an embarrassment to the community but he keeps arranging "accidental" run-ins with him at conventions he knows valjean will be at and he draw fanart of their fursonas like kissing and holding hands and shit.
