Michelle Obama Recruits Jordin Sparks, Doug E. Fresh, Dr. Oz And More For 'Let's Move!' Campaign
First lady Michelle Obama’s quest to get America’s children active is going hip-hop. In collaboration with the Partnership for a Healthier America and Hip Hop Public Health, Mrs. Obama's Lets Move! campaign plans to release a 19-song hip-hop album Sept. 30 along with 10 music videos. Artists like Run DMC, Doug E. Fresh, Ashanti, and Jordin Sparks will lend their voices to the compilation.
Let’s Move! executive director and White House assistant chef Sam Kass views the initiative as a great way to reach kids and confirms that the White House is backing the project. “Cultural leaders and visionaries in our country can give these messages to kids in a way that’s not preachy. Kids are going to be dancing and listening to the music,” he said. “I think hip-hop in particular – so many kids love hip-hop. It’s such a core part of our culture…and particularly in the African-American community and the Latino community which is being disproportionately affected by those health issues.”
The videos will be distributed to 40 schools in New York City before expanding to other major cities, according to US News and World Reports.
