See the impact of Asthma in your ZIP code
To improve the health of Californians over their lifespans, Governor Jerry Brown established the Let’s Get Healthy California Task Force to develop a 10-year plan. The task force identified asthma emergency department (ED) visits as one of the 39 indicators to track over time and measure progress being made.
Why asthma ED visits? This asthma indicator represents people with severe asthma or poorly managed asthma, who visit an ED for their asthma, expressed as a rate per 10,000 California residents. Asthma ED events are serious ,, often preventable, and costly. These data can be used to compare the rates of asthma ED visits by ZIP code. This information can inform public health practitioners and health care service providers in patient interventions, program planning and in targeting interventions.
What can't these data tell us? These data alone cannot tell us what neighborhoods within the ZIP code are at highest risk for asthma ED visits, the total burden of asthma in a ZIP code, nor does it tell us what causes asthma ED visits
