So the Nominations for Best Picture at the Oscars came out and...
Yeah, I don't know about you, but this is a very weak line up. When compared to the line ups we had for the past three years, it's clear as day there were not a lot of amazing movies that came out this year. That's not inherently a bad thing, there's no law of physics that says every year must have a certain amount of timeless bangers, but it definitely confirms my suspicions that we're at the start of a decline.
One could argue the arts have been in decline for years now, and to a certain extent I agree. However, I'm pretty confident what we're seeing is a direct result of the 2023 actors strike, which prompted Hollywood to greenlight whatever they thought would make them a quick buck. Now that A.I has been confirmed to be the new, hot go-to for "writers" in the industry, the decline in challenging and riveting storytelling is only going to get worse.
They say things have to get worse before they get better. Welp, I guess I'm gonna have to buckle up for a very bumpy second half of the decade.
I've been trying to watch Love Hotel (1985) all week but I can't find a free version with English subtitles 😭
Probably going to fail Japanuary this year at this rate, but at least I'll hit my personal goal of 15 new movies this month!
