Part 1
A pillar of flame flared up somewhere nearby.
He grabbed the hot palm and silently swore never to let it go.
Ever again.
..................................................................................
Two days had already passed since the final battle.
He was lying in a dazzling white hospital room among a dozen of the same wounded. After the drug administered by the nurse, he felt terribly sleepy - apparently, they had injected him with morphine, but he tried to keep himself conscious with all his might. He almost no longer felt pain - only some kind of dull numbness throughout his body. His thoughts were confused, constantly flowing from one to another; it was hard to breathe.
There was an ache somewhere in his chest.
His eyes were drawn to the next bed only.
It would be impossible to tell who was lying in front of you - a man or a woman. Firstly, because of their height; secondly, their face and body were so carefully wrapped with bandages and dressings that it would be difficult to find a piece of skin peeking out from under the numerous layers of gauze.
But he knew it was her. He knew because he personally dragged her here after the battle. He knew because he demanded to lay her down here, next to him. Because he felt that he should look after her. None other than himself.
Levi himself did not fully understand how much he missed her expressive brown eyes until they finally removed several bandages from her face. He stood by her bed, leaning on the nightstand, watching as the nurse removed the bloody gauze. It somehow became almost impossible to watch. He felt his heart pounding.
She squinted slightly against the bright sunlight, streaming into the room through the wide window. He looked at
her, wrapped in bandages, looked at her burnt eyelashes, at the old scar under her blind eye...
Perhaps he had come to know her face even better than his own over the years. She suddenly seemed so familiar and
vulnerable to him that he had barely restrained him from the urge to hug her with all his might. Levi staggered - his head was spinning, he still felt an unusual weakness in his body - and grabbed the windowsill with one hand to keep from falling.
"Is everything okay? You look a bit pale, don't you want to lie down?" the nurse, who had finished the bandage, turned to Levi.
"No," he said and, coming to his senses, repeated a little more firmly, "No. Everything is fine. "
The nurse gave him an assessing look, then shrugged and left the room. He slowly sank down on the chair.
"Shitty-glasses."
Damn, how could he have managed to say such familiar words in such a strange, almost breaking voice? He wanted so much to say it as usual, with a grin. Maybe even with a slight, understandable only to the two of them, mockery. But in the end, it turned out to be something like bitterness, sorrow and tenderness in one bottle. He felt uneasy from his own phrase.
“Levi—i,” Hange said quietly, her voice hoarse, “You’re here".
“Where else would I be, stupid?”
He pulled her glasses with the broken frame out of his pocket and put them on the pillow, next to her head.
"They're sure not in their best... But it's better than nothing, I guess..."
"Oh...Can you help me? I'd like to see you, huh," she tried to smile, but ended up wincing in pain.
Levi carefully put the glasses on her, after wiping his face with his sleeve.
What if she notices.
