I just got a brand new tattoo from Brent at Leviticus Tattoo in Minneapolis. I love the new piece of work on my body and I love the experience of getting a tattoo but this post isn't about getting a tattoo. However, if you're looking for a place to get something done put Leviticus on your list. 

As I mentioned, a gentleman named Brent did the creative work of permanently adhering an image to my body. It's was a simple enough design which meant that we we're able to have a conversation for the bulk of the two hour session. What that really meant was that I got the chance to interview Brent the tattoo guy about his work and his life. It turns out dudes who permanently tattoo strangers for a living have some stories. If you meet or know any experienced tattoo artists ask them about the weirdest thing they've ever seen and I promise you they'll have a decent story to share. 

Because my new tattoo connects to a significant bit of travel, we ended up talking about a lot of the places Brent the tattoo guy has lived and worked. It turns out he's hung a tattoo shingle in a fair number of cities. I mentioned that most of my travel is the result of tagging along when my wife travels to a conference or other work-related gathering. It's way more cost effective than an actual vacation or trip for the sake of going on a trip and, lucky for me, I'm actually pretty interested in the work my wife does.

Then Brent the tattoo guy told me that because tattoo artists don't typically accrue paid vacation what he does is call on connections he has in various cities when he's looking to travel and try to find a time when a tattoo shop he has a connection with either has some staff turnover and thus some open space in their studio or are in their very busy season and thus looking for extra guest artists. Brent the tattoo guy takes advantage of these windows of opportunities to create working vacations. He can travel, do a little work in the place he's visiting, and cover the cost of travel and the cost of missing work back home for that time. 

Brent the tattoo guy pointed out that because he's pretty into the work he does it's actually kind of great that he gets to go do it in other places. I think that's the key to this whole idea. I'm currently lucky in that the various things I'm working on are all things I'm working on because I'm really excited about them and have the luxury of getting to do what excites me. So the idea of getting to travel and find opportunities to perform some comedy, host a show, or record a podcast sound great. I would take advantage of something like that in a second. 

I wonder how many people have work they do that they use to take them places like Brent the tattoo guy? And I wonder if there are a lot of people, like me, who probably could be finding ways to do that but haven't ever really looked in to it? So, that's today idea worth stealing. Find a way to let the work you do, the work you're in to, take you to new places and expose you to new people and communities. It'll likely make your work stronger and add richness to your life.

Just got back from getting my first tattoo done...

I went to Leviticus Tattoo in Minneapolis off of lake and 41st. I went in there with some sketches of what I wanted and wasn't really planning on getting anything. I was more there to ask questions and figure out the price for what I wanted to get. Well they asked me if I wanted to get something tonight because they could fit me in. I thought "I'm here, they can do it tonight, fuck it I'll get it done." The tattoo I got was the word "Dreamer." on the underside of my right wrist. Ryan "Opie" Mueller was the artist and I was damn well pleased with his work. He was a really chill guy too. I had a picture of sora from kingdom hearts with me because I wanted to know how much it would cost me. I asked him if he would be comfortable doing something like that. He said he could make it better than the picture looked haha. So I told him I'm going to hold him to his word. Then he had this idea that he wants to do a japanese style sleeve with the picture I had of sora. His idea sounded really badass and pumped me up so I scheduled an appointment for the 21st to get it done. I'm excited to see what he draws up :) My tattoo is wrapped up right now, but I'll post pictures when I can.
