“…During the 70s, Gittings helped form the first gay caucus in an organization, the American Library Association. Her main focus was to place positive homosexual information and literature in libraries, something she lacked during her coming out process. In 1972, she was a major voice in the movement to get the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from the list of disorders. Gittings received numerous honors including a lifetime membership to the American Library Association and an award named in her honor by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. Gittings passed away from breast cancer at the age of 74. “Larry Kramer turned his anger and grief into action. He was one of the first to sound the alarm for the HIV/AIDS crisis in 1981 when the New York Times wrote about a rare type of "cancer" affecting gay men. He was in the proverbial trenches fighting for LGBTQ rights and organized AIDS activists even before he was diagnosed as HIV positive. Kramer co-founded the advocacy groups GMHC (Gay Men's Health Crisis) and ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power), which coined the iconic SILENCE = DEATH logo that became a symbol for the AIDS crisis. Kramer rose to prominence battling what he cited as negligence from the FDA and the US government. Kramer and the activists he demonstrated with were fueled by rage. They led demonstrations, blocked roads during rush hour and staged "die-ins" that grabbed media attention, eventually forcing the government to address the AIDS crisis and provide access to new treatment methods. "This is a plague," Kramer shouted at ACT UP organizers in a famous clip from 1991. "Until we get our acts together, we are as good as dead." Kramer's controversial calls on activists to take the AIDS crisis into their own hands helped push the FDA to eventually approve the use and distribution of experimental drugs that helped save the lives of AIDS patients. After the Stonewall riots, where she was said to have thrown the first brick, Rivera started S.T.A.R. (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries), a group focused on providing shelter and support to queer, homeless youth, with Marsha P. Johnson. She also fought against the exclusion of transgender people in New York’s Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act. “Bayard Rustin was a close friend and advisor to Martin Luther King Jr. and organizer of the 1963 March on Washington. However, because he was an openly gay man, he did not receive wide recognition for his integral role in the civil rights movement. Rustin’s sexuality was used against him and Dr. King by opposing parties, who threatened to spread lies about their relationship. This forced Rustin to work in the shadows to prevent bringing further controversy to both Dr. King and the March on Washington.
