Why This Blog is More Important Than Anything
I’m black and today I was shopping at PacSun with two of my friends, who’re also black. We walked in, and one of the supervisors, a white woman, told an employee (who was also white) to follow and talk to us. So, the girl did the usual “hi, do you need any help finding anything?” crap that stores have to do, and and even when we said no, she persisted. “What do you guys have in your bags?” “What are you looking for?” and we politely answered her questions until she had no choice but to walk away.
My friends I were pissed off so we left the store, fuming and ranting about how racist the encounter had been, until I finally couldn’t take it anymore. I went back to the store and calmly told the manager how humiliating and disrespectful it was to have us followed as soon as we walked in, without even giving us a chance to browse or shop in peace. I continued on to say how I also work and retail and understand the liabilities faced when merch is stolen, but the way in which she handled herself was unprofessional and rude.
She looked me in my face with the scrunchy-eyebrow-confused-white person face and told me that she had only sent the girl over to tell us about the deals, and when I told her that we had been asked to show our bags, she unprofessionally directed the blame to her subordinate, who bullshitted and said “Oh, I just really love that store, I wanted to know what they got!” even though she never actually showed any interest in what we had, and seemed to be checking to make sure we hadn’t stolen anything. She then told me that I was misunderstanding the situation. I reminded her that there was a white couple in the same section as us and they were not acknowledged and left to shop in peace. She apologized, but it was the fake “the customer is always right” apology, like “I’m sorry you felt that way,” and we left without acknowledging her.
So, I’m submitting this so that when people come on this blog and say you’re racist for what you post, they’ll see that this is real life, and white girls really ain’t shit.
