Needless to say, June has been a hectic, crazy month. I participated in 3 different readathons this month, with a fourth one happening this Friday! I read plenty of amazing books, and some not so great books. And now it’s time to share all my pains with y’all! Let’s start in the beginning.
I’m first going to talk about the books I read outside of readathons. The first one I finished for the month was Tiffany Sly Lives Here Now by Dana L Davis. I absolutely loved this story and wish it were longer (as with so many books I read recently). I also read Notes from a Public Typewriter by Michael Gustafson and Oliver Uberti and A Bride’s Story volume 9 by Kaoru Mori. A Bride’s Story has to be my new favorite series of all time. I wish the updates didn’t take so long! Lastly, I read All Summer Long by Hope Larson at the end of the month. All these books didn’t get read with any corresponding readathon, but I had a blast reading them!
Now time to bring on the readathons wrap-ups.
Library-A-Thon (June 3rd to 9th)
Like most readathon, the goal is in the title. Library-A-Thon was all about reading solely from books you borrowed from the library. I did fairly well with this challenge, and read a total of 6 books for the week. 3 graphic novels, 2 young adults, and 1 middle grade.
A Bride’s Story volumes 6-8 by Kaoru Mori – Again, this is my top series of all time and I absolutely love all the individual stories of the different bride. (volume 8 is my favorite!)
Monday’s Not Coming by Tiffany D Jackson – Review Here! And full of spoilers, so be warn! I love this book so, so much. Claudia is such a deep character, and Monday is so realistic, and I love Tiffany D Jackson’s writing and research of her books. Read Allegedly for more awesomeness!
My So-Called Bollywood Life by Nisha Sharma – I did enjoy this book, as much as the others. Winnie is really hilarious to read, and I love stories about destiny and bad-ass girls. Review here!
Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed – Fast-paced middle grade story about a girl that upsets the village landlord and ends up working for him and his home. I love that the author never tried to humanize his actions, and that she included things like having to change because of marriage and responsibilities. I wish it were longer, but it’s the average length of middle grade novels, so that’s ok. c:
#QueerLitRead Readathon (June 10th – 16th)
Goal: Read as many queer books as possible while also tackling the bingo board. I covered some challenges, but not all. And that’s OK, because I loved most of the books I read!
Hurricane Child by Kheryn Callender covers way more than just a young girl falling for another girl. There’s family, religion, memories, mental health, all wrapped up in a short Middle Grade Novel. I absolutely love the imagery in this book and the writing. One of my top reads of the week.
Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli – This was the most hyped book of 2018, being a sequel to the popular Simon vs the Homo Sapien Agenda and I was kinda looking forward to it. Leah was never my favorite character, but I was curious to see whom she ended up with. This book irritated me at certain points, mainly Leah’s character, her attitude towards her mother, and the whole labeling issue and outing problems in this book. I wish I loved it more, but sadly, I didn’t.
Peter Darling by Austin Chant. #Ownvoices! I did not think I would love this book as much as I did! Never a fan of Peter Pan, this book made me a believer that I too could fly! The way Peter and Hook are written? The idea of Neverland, all of it just screams fantastical elements! I so, so wish there would be a sequel, after that ending!!! 2nd favorite of the week!
RUNNING WITH LIONS by Julian Winters! Fave of the week! Hands-down! I never thought I’d get excited over a sports camp contemporary love story, but HERE I AM. I cannot articulate how much Sebastian means to me, and his loving caring nature! REVIEW HERE FOR MORE GUSHING
The Summer of Jordi Perez (And the Best Burger in Los Angeles) by Amy Spalding. Not a fave, I had similar problems with this book as with Leah. Unlikeable character, boring plot, and honestly, I enjoyed the friendship with the guy than the relationship with the girl. I felt none of the characters had substance, which again, is sad because I wanted to love this book. Sadly, I did not. :c
Lastly, I participated in the Manga Readathon. I read way too much, and to keep this post from being too long, I’ll include it in a separate post! Click here for the Manga Readathon Wrap-Up!
