You Win (A PLL Fanfic)
“You don’t exist without me.” Alison spat, staring at her with dark eyes.
Spencer’s jaw tightened. A deep feeling settled in the pool of her stomach as she returned Alison’s glare. She almost wanted to laugh at how irrational Alison was being.
“Really, Ali? Then tell me this: What is a leader without any followers?” Her eyes darted over Alison’s stony face.
“Because it seems to me the question isn’t whether we will exist without you, but whether you will exist without us,”
Alison flinched. Spencer’s heart hammered in her chest as she watched the effect her words had on the blonde. It felt so fucking good to put her in her place. The adrenaline rush was insane.
“And as far as I’m concerned, you are dead to me already.” Spencer hissed. Her heart picked up speed. She let out shallow breaths, waiting for the next retort.
Alison’s eyes gleamed. Yet instead of saying anything, she pushed past Spencer and walked out the door. Spencer looked down, swallowing a lump in her throat. She needed to calm down, to ground herself. She started for the stairs, planning to scream into her pillow or maybe cry for a while.
But something was stopping her. Someone.
She had let Alison get away with too much for too long. They all had. And now that she’d finally stood up to her, nothing was different. Alison just walked away with the upper hand, like she always did. Something had to be done. She had to finish this.
Breathing hard, Spencer turned back around and ran out the door, slamming it behind her. A crack of thunder lit up the backyard. She began a fast pace over to Alison, who was strolling along like she didn’t have a care in the world. The sight filled her with fury. How could she be so damn calm after what had just happened?!
“HEY! This conversation isn’t over!” she shouted.
Alison whirled around. The bitchy face was back. “It is over, Spencer, and so are we.”
She turned back, like that was that and there was nothing else to be done.
“Don’t you walk away from me!” Spencer slowed down, and noticed a shovel leaning up against the construction workers’ table. She lunged for it and lifted it into the air.
“Ali, I said STOP!”
Another crack of thunder. Alison turned around again. She barely seemed to notice the shovel.
“You’re way out of your league, Spencer.” She snapped out her name like it was poison.
At this point she was seeing red. Spencer was so angry she was reduced to an eerily tranquil feeling. Like her body was telling her this was right.
“Am I?” she huffed out. “You sure about that?”
Alison’s face was incredulous. She was finally realizing the consequences of her actions. Her eyes flickered over to the shovel. Ah. There it was.
“Why don’t you put that thing down before you hurt yourself?” Alison said. Her usual demeaning tone had a layer of fear under it. It was amazing to see her so vulnerable.
She advanced forward, raising the shovel even higher. Alison backed away, the panic now clear in her eyes.
“Spencer, stop!” she cried. “This isn’t funny!” Tears dotted her eyes. Spencer realized this was the first time she’d ever seen Alison cry.
Funny. She’d cried in front of Alison plenty of times, under the guise that she was with a trusted friend. Now it was becoming obvious all the ways Alison had manipulated them.
“Does it look like I’m joking?” she whispered. A flash of lightning lit up both their faces.
Alison shook her head, tears spilling down her cheeks. “Don’t do this, Spence. Please!”
Spencer let out a laugh. She couldn’t help it. Fearing for her life, and still Alison was trying to manipulate her!
“You gonna run?” Spencer asked.
Alison froze, like she was a bunny who’d just spotted a predator. And then, right on cue, she broke into a sprint. Spencer chased after her almost gleefully. Giving her a head start would be too much of a goody-goody thing to do.
They crossed over to Alison’s backyard, where Spencer finally caught up with her. Alison tripped over a fallen branch and fell to the ground. She looked up at Spencer, chest rising and falling with every breath. Her eyes glittered in the light, reddened from crying.
“Spencer. Drop the shovel and we can forget this whole thing ever happened,” Alison sniffed. “I won’t tell Melissa anything. Just drop the shovel.” Her face contorted into an image not unlike that of a Greek tragedy mask.
Okay. It was clearly a desperate plea for her life, one that anyone would make if they were in this same situation. A typical Alison bargain, you could even call it. But this was interesting. Spencer wanted to see how far she would go.
“You promise?” Spencer said, leaning in close to her face.
Alison nodded. By now, her whole face was red. “Yes.”
“Say it like you mean it.” Spencer said firmly.
“I promise!” Alison yelled, her voice cracking. Thunder struck behind her.
Spencer lowered the shovel to her side. Slowly, Alison pulled herself up. Brushed the dirt off her jeans. Sniffed. Her eyes met Spencer’s.
And then she swung the shovel. Alison’s head met the hard crack of steel. Her body went limp and fell over like a rag doll into the fenced-off pit. Spencer stepped closer and stared down at Alison, who was curled up in an almost fetal position. It felt like a strange reversal of roles.
It was when she stared at the darkly stained dent in Alison’s head that Spencer realized there was blood all over her—on her clothes, on her face, in her hair. She rubbed the blood into her argyle sweater and wiped specks off her face with her sleeve. She’d probably have to burn this entire outfit.
With that thought Spencer decided it was time to go back to the barn. She turned around and dragged the shovel behind her, through the grass and onto the dirt. She lifted it up and kept walking, similar to how Alison had been just minutes before.
Huh. She was already stepping into her new role quite nicely.
