fast in your car
i keep imagining the night that we might run away. you call me, telling me you’re on your way. i smile and grab my bag, the one i had packed hours in advance. soon the familiar sound of your car fills my ears and i’m running out the door, the only light is that of the moon and dim streetlights. i jump into the car, my spot in the passenger seat, and kiss you before you pull out. we speed off onto the highway, music blasting once we’re away from the hell of what was my legal home, leaving behind all of our worries. our journey for the rest of our lives begins, together we know that things will be better. i’ll sing love songs to you as you drive, occasionally staring at me, one hand in mine and the other on the steering wheel. we might not have a clue on where we’re going, but we know that we’re getting out: and that’s enough.
