I'll give you back my farm and I'll give you back my house...
On 23 April 1971 Bowie headed to the studio with Mickey (aka Nicky) King. Three tracks were cut that day by Bowie and friends: Rupert the Riley, How Lucky You Are (aka Miss Peculiar) and Lightning Frightening (aka The Man aka I've Got Lightning). It’s all a bit unclear as to what happened, and what the purpose was. What we do know is this. The three songs are excellent! Rupert the Riley and How Lucky You Are exist with lead vocals by King and both are solidly in the Hunky Dory era. Lightning Frightening is very different – and Bowie takes the mic for a dark, deep slide guitar groove; and the song not only harks back to The Man Who Sold The World and Holy Holy, but also seems to me to anticipate (as do The Arnold Corns cuts) the Ziggy period to come… A stupid edited version cutting off the intro and fading in during the vocals was released with the 1990 reissue of the The Man Who Sold The World album. But the full song is out there… and here it is:
Written by David Bowie. Recorded 23 April 1971. Unreleased. Edited version available on The Man Who Sold the World (1970) Rykodisck reissue (1990). Full version - as on YouTube above - available on various bootlegs.
