I've been using the name @ajthe90skid on 90% of all my sites for the past 3 years, and only using Lightning-Powered on Deviantart. Until today. R.I.P. LP, it's been a good 10 years but it didn't make sense to hold on to 3 names online for just one site that most people don't even use anymore (even though i still do). it was hurting my visibility and becoming inconvenient. 2018 is all about streamlining. advice for commission artists on how to avoid bad clients.
i'd hate to put people on blast but i'm gonna put someone on blast. just did a sketch for a guy in Germany via livestream the other day. his account is lantanoid he said he would pay me by the hour, and like an idiot, i agreed to this instead of charging people BEFORE i start working, the way i normally do. believe me this is NOTHING i've ever done before or will do again. i regretted it immediately. he was impatient, entitled, excessively picky and constantly complaining about everything, especially lag (which was due to his crappy computer since everyone i've ever worked with never had problems with lag whenever i stream). he even started criticizing the program i draw in (SAI). like that's actually going to affect him personally or prevent me from making my art correctly. after I drew everything he wanted, and used the programs he wanted me to use to stream with for 4 hours, he asked for more and NEVER paid me for what i already did, the 4 hours worth of work. i even undercharged myself and tried settling for $12 an hour, a minimum wage in the USA. as of now he's constantly online on skype but ignoring my texts. the moral of this story is, if you're a freelance artist and trying to make a living off your art, make damn sure you're getting a downpayment BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING. if someone's acting like they can't afford you, and they start haggling before they even show you what they WANT, avoid them. if they can't TELL YOU exactly HOW MUCH art they want, avoid them. if they refuse to let you take breaks (which he did), avoid them. if the job is paying you LESS than MINIMUM WAGE, avoid them! it doesn't matter if you're sketching or painting the Sistine Chapel. it doesn't matter how easy it is for you to do. your TIME is what's valuable, so make sure the deal is FAIR for you, not just for your client. my mistake here, was that i was too generous and flexible with someone who didn't appreciate or deserve it. DON'T LET ANYONE SCREW YOU OVER. BECAUSE IF THEY CAN, THEY WILL. the assholes will, anyway.
