“I saved your life. Without my permission, you’re not allowed to die.”

Zhang Xiao pinched herself, hoping that everything was just a hallucination. She prayed that she wouldn’t feel anything, but the pinch left a sharp sting in her arm. This wasn’t a hallucination, but reality. She wasn’t in the Fourteenth Prince’s palace, but in her bedroom. She wasn’t Ma’ertai Ruoxi, but Zhang Xiao, just a plain twenty-five year old woman in modern-day China.

She had gone through this same routine every day since dying in Fourteenth Prince’s arms, since waking up from a coma in the hospital. She could remember every moment of living in the Qing dynasty. Her interactions with her sister, Emperor Kangxi, and the princes were so clear. Fourth Prince’s every word, every move, every piece of warmth he had given her were etched in her mind. But how could everything that she had gone through as Ma’ertai Ruoxi be false?

Ding dong.

“Not this again,” Zhang Xiao said as she covered her ears.

Ding dong. Ding dong. Ding dong.

She tried to block out the sound of the doorbell, but she knew it wouldn’t stop. She let out a groan and dragged herself out of bed. When she reached her apartment door, she opened it and glared at the man holding a rose bouquet.

“What do you want, Huang Di?”

“Xiaoxiao, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have cheated on you. If I hadn’t, you wouldn’t have been in that accident and gotten into a coma. Please forgive me,” he said.

He handed the flowers to her, but Zhang Xiao just rolled her eyes.

“I mean it. I’m really sorry. Please forgive me.”

She scoffed, “Huang Di, this is the third time you’ve done this this week. If you really thought your pity would be enough to trick me, you thought wrong.”

“I really mean it! I’ll break up with Meimei! Xiaoxiao, I’ll come by your place and give you a bouquet of roses every day to show my sincerity!”

“Do that, and you’ll be violating the restraining order that I’ll be filing today.”

Zhang Xiao slammed the door shut, causing the mail catcher to shake and her mail to fall on the ground.

“Damn it.”

She knelt down to clean up the mess. As she picked up a few envelopes, a strange flyer caught her eye.

Yin Zheng twisted and turned, unable to fall asleep. He turned to look at his clock and realized that two hours had passed since he had lay in his bed. He reached over and turned on the lamp on the bedside table. He sat up and ruffled his hair, frustrated at his insomnia.

Since the night of the accident, the night when he had accidentally ran his car into a woman on the street, he began to have sleeping problems. The accident was weird, and the fact that he had caused the woman to hit a sign, get electrocuted, and fall into a coma bothered him, but he had passed the case onto his lawyer, saying that he was willing to pay for all of the woman’s medical expenses. From that point on, Yin Zheng had erased that incident from his conscience, yet his mind wouldn’t allow him to rest.

Only when his mind had become tired from fighting with him would he be able to get some sleep. He was not left alone during these few hours, however. For some inexplicable reason, he dreamt of the Qing dynasty. He was the same character each night, some Fourth Prince, and each dream would somehow be a continuation of the dream from the previous night. He had never enjoyed learning history in school, yet his dreams illustrated the Qing dynasty to the utmost detail. It was almost as if he was living this Fourth Prince’s life.

The interactions he had with each person in his dreams felt strange to him; they were foreign, strict, and heavy. But with one person, they felt unrestricted, natural, and real. Ma’ertai Ruoxi was just a palace maid, yet he was able to feel at peace with her. Her directness, her unfaltering courage, and her rebellious spirit intrigued him. When she fought with Mingyu, her antics put a smile on his face. When her voice shook after he kissed her, his heart ached. When she wore his magnolia hairpin and asked him to marry her, he felt warmth, happiness that he had never felt before. Yin Zheng knew that she was just a figment of his dreams, but he had grown attached to her; he had fallen for her.

“I can’t ask Father to let me marry you anymore.”

He made a fist with his hand as anxiety and frustration overwhelmed him. Why was he unable to fall asleep now, of all times? Why was he unable to go back to his dream? Why was he unable to return to Ruoxi’s side?

In an attempt to calm down, he left his bed and went to the kitchen. He grabbed a glass from a cupboard and poured himself some water. He began to slowly drink while breathing steadily. His eyes wandered, but they stopped at an untouched pile of yesterday’s mail.

Zhang Xiao took a deep breath. Her heart was pounding, and her feet felt like they were stuck to the floor. Her hands shook, and she swallowed in anxiety.

“Zhang Xiao, you can’t back out now.”

She took another deep breath and mustered all the strength she had to step inside the Emperor Kangxi exhibit.

As she looked at each artifact, memories began to rush back in her mind, overwhelming her. Tears began to build in her eyes with every step she took. Everything that she had seen and touched as Ma’ertai Ruoxi was all here.

Afraid that other visitors would see her getting teary, she turned her head away. Her eyes landed on a painting nearby. She stepped toward it, and when she was close enough to clearly see it, a tear fell. She traced over the familiar scene, a rare moment of Emperor Kangxi’s sons enjoying each other’s company. When her gaze reached the Fourth Prince, her heart stopped. Standing next to him was a palace maid serving tea, and in her hair was a magnolia hairpin.

“I… Ma’ertai Ruoxi did exist,” Zhang Xiao said as a smile appeared on her face. “I did exist.”

Suddenly, loud footsteps could be heard behind her. She quickly wiped her teary eyes and turned to look at the person who entered the room.

Her eyes widened as she was filled with shock. The man before her looked exactly like Aisin-Gioro Yinzhen, Emperor Yongzheng, her Fourth Prince. His gait, his expression, his gaze were the same, yet everything felt different. This wasn’t the Qing dynasty, but modern-day China, and she was Zhang Xiao, not Ma’ertai Ruoxi. Would he still be able to recognize her?

She tried to call him, but no words would come out. She was afraid. She had searched everywhere for any sign of Ma’ertai Ruoxi, but she had found nothing. She had put so much effort, time, hope into it, but it all ended in failure. How could this random occurrence give her an answer? How could this random man be her Fourth Prince? The fear of failure overpowered the tiny sliver of hope in her heart.

She stood there silently as hot tears flowed down her cheeks.

Feeling a gaze on him, the man turned to look at her. He took a few steps forward and asked, “Do we know each other?”

Zhang Xiao said nothing as she continued to cry.

The man searched his pockets to find a tissue to offer her, but found none. Not knowing what to do, he looked at her with a caring, but helpless expression. He then turned and walked away, leaving the exhibit.

“F-Fourth Prince,” she managed to say as his shadow disappeared.

Zhang Xiao clenched her hands, angry at herself for not taking the chance, for letting him go. She wanted to collapse on the floor and cry loudly then and there, but her legs wouldn’t allow it. She stood there, paralyzed with regret, as her tears rained on the ground.

Suddenly, there was the sound of footsteps entering the exhibit once again. Hearing the footsteps, she tilted her head down, but a pair of shoes entered her line of vision. She looked up, realizing that the man from a moment ago had returned.

The man looked at her, and a small smile surfaced on his face. Tears were building in his eyes, but she could see happiness in them. He took her hand, and Zhang Xiao felt a familiar warmth from him.    

“Ruoxi.”
