The Linguistics of Boob
As part of my MFA program, I am required to take a few out-of-genre writing courses, so I opted for a Creative NonFiction course, rather than Fiction. So I, aspiring poet Jade Benoit, asked my friend, aspiring Creative NonFictioneer Meg Reid, to help me out with writing my very first memoir-esque essay about my struggle with what one may call "Severe Breast Insecurity". This was our text exchange:
Jade: I am writing my first essay about boobs. What word should I use? Boobs is kinda kitschy & breasts sounds so medical.
Meg: God, lady parts always provide such a linguistic challenge. Tatas is far too cute. Twins and girls etc as well. Tits always sounds angry to me but you could make it work. Boobs may be best...
This is what it's like to be a writer. I still don't know which word to use.
