STANDINGS FOR THE KOTETSU YAMAMOTO YOUNG LION CUP
The Young Lion Cup made its return in 2017 at Lion’s Gate Project8 (October 12) in honor of former head of the NJPW dojo, Kotetsu Yamamoto. The tournament is round-robin (similar to G1 Climax, Best of the Super Juniors, and World Tag League) with the key difference being that the wrestler with the most points overall is the winner. The points are determined by: 2 points per win, 1 point per draw for each wrestler in the match, and 0 points per loss.
Heading into the finals of the tournament, here are the standings:
Katsuya Kitamura: 8
Hirai Kawato: 6
Tomoyuki Oka: 6
Shota Umino: 4 (eliminated/no chance of winning)
Ren Narita: 0 (eliminated/no chance of winning)
Tetsuhiro Yagi: 0 (eliminated/no chance of winning)
Kawato needs to win his match to enter a tie. From there, if Kitamura defeats Oka, he runs away with the tournament. If Oka wins, there comes a dilemma as Kawato has defeated Oka, but Kitamura’s defeated Kawato (so presumably there’d be a three-way match down the line). Of course, if Kawato loses his match or reaches a draw, Oka can win the entire tournament with a win of his own. But if Kitamura and Oka reach a draw, Kitamura can still win the whole tournament as he’d be one point ahead with 9.
