5. What's the project you're proudest of working on this year?

recency bias might be getting me here, but WSABH wins the award of being the longest piece of fiction I've written and finished, so it's hard to not feel proud of it. I had a clear sense of what I wanted to say and do and executed it with some degree of finesse - I was working a lot with setup and payoff, and it did actually pay off! besides, the section break illustrations were fun to make and (I hope) add to the overall ambiance.

16. What writing software (or hardware?) did you use this year? Do you have any plan or desire to change that in the future?

I mostly live the google docs life for writing (I like the tab function - lets me consolidate notes and drafts into one document), but I use milanote and physical note-taking a fair bit when I'm outlining. it would be nice to be less reliant on cloud storage and google as a company, but I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the free/cheap word processors out there.

29. Do you have a favorite passage or line you wrote this year? Share it!

It's a farce. Playing house in a funeral home. Sitting three feet apart in chairs that look like they were designed to be displayed rather than used. Putting their responsibilities on a shelf while they pretend to be victors, even though the New Republic can't seem to change even the decor their dead enemies left them.

I don't really have any specific things I want to ask abt your fic process but. I do want to hear abt it. so here is your free pass to talk abt whatever you want re: star wars fanfiction

I really like writing fic from the standpoint of Making An Argument For A Particular Reading Of The Text. at this point in my life I primarily read and write nonfiction, I love an essay, and that work informs how I view fiction as well. like I would consider a lot of my recent work (fic but also textposts) to be "sociologically informed," or at least influenced by frameworks like conflict theory, just because of the sheer volume of work in that field that I have read over the last few years. so I generally end up making these arguments about how the social world(s) of The Star Wars Universe functions and how it influences the characters' lives. existing works tend to give cursory, broad-strokes overviews of "this planet is like this," but don't really dwell on variation within that analytical unit (even though you're going to experience The Overarching Normative Culture differently if you're in a major metropolitan center versus a rural area versus, like, a moon), so I enjoy getting to emphasize that variation by asking how a given character is going to (or demonstrably does, in the source material) relate to the social contexts they exist within.

and even beyond social pseudoanalysis and critique, it's fun to make the case for reading the text in a certain way - queer readings come to mind, since they're so common in fandom. the argument there is often "the way this character acts is explained by (or is at least compatible with) them being gay/trans/ace/etc." or "the way these characters treat each other is explained by (or is compatible with) them being gay," which can seem trivial because it is common in fandom, but is still An Argument About The Source Material!

that, to me, is what a lot of success/failure in the realm of fic hinges on - have I convinced the audience that these characters can and do feel this way about each other? have I convinced the audience that this character would do this thing? have I convinced the audience that this fictional world functions in this way? does my work feel true to the source material while still providing new insights? (this is also why I prefer writing fic that is 90-100% canon compliant, lol.)
