Painting by @RobertFuerer | ‘Mother’ oil painting on canvas. I thought I crushed this painting for a final project in my Painting 2 class at SUNY Purchase. I genuinely believe that my month of designing and studies we're readily apparent in the finished piece so you can understand my frustration. When I turned it in, the professor said it didn't meet the criteria of the assignment, which was to paint a cake. I tried to stand up for it, saying that I didn't execute just one cake but 12 and an elaborate narrative of a mother who lost her son in the war. The Professor who had been absent for nearly a month and came for the day we were supposed to turn it in didn't agree, so instead continue the fight, I gave in and painted a cake for her with only a few days to spare in the semester. The bad taste for punishing me for thinking outside of the box stuck with me for three years, and I made damn sure to stay clear of any of her courses after that and recommended classmates as well. Sadly, some teachers don't understand what creativity is or how to foster it in others. In my 20 plus years of teaching, I know whenever a student has gone off on a limb and left our assignment in the dust, I take the time to tell the whole class about how proud I am that they had the guts to do something new.
