Lisa Pentagraham and Violet Half-Baked Analysis Because Why Not
Lisa's character and her relationship with Violet is so interesting to me. Lisa has painstakingly made her way to the top of the Biddle School's social ladder by avoiding the usual middle school cliques and setting herself very purposefully outside of those groups. She's not a bully but she extorts other kids for Starchman Stars. She doesn't run the newspaper but she gets all the gossip from it. She has access to the whole school's security system and has her eye on everything all the time. She's probably not a spectral since she can't see ghosts, but even without prior supernatural knowledge she's learned a lot just by observing the security cameras and making educated guesses. She doesn't act, she just watches from the sidelines, and when she needs something done she gets somebody else to do it for her. She's exploited the middle school social circles to get as much power as a 7th grader can reasonably have (which is probably why the Witch has turned her attention to her. She's got every trait Fauxbia needs for a new host, or whatever it is she's trying to do with her). Even if Lisa doesn't have every detail of the events going on around her she has the bigger picture. And she uses this knowledge to remain as detached and in-control as she possibly can, and isn't willing to sacrifice this control for anything.
Anything except for Violet, that is. Violet is the only person in the entire school (that I know of) that gets drinks at the Barfe for free. She gives away her hiding place and sacrifices herself to keep Violet away from the student council without giving it a second thought, and action she probably wouldn't even consider for anybody else. The second she notices Violet at the bar in chapter 9, she lights up and is instantly charmed by her presence alone. Violet is the only person in the whole school who she doesn't try to take advantage of, and when she lies or withholds information from her she feels bad about it. She's clearly got a massive crush on Violet, even referring to Jeff as her rival for her attention in the narration in her first scene in chapter 9. Which makes it sadder that the feeling probably isn't mutual.
Violet cares deeply about Lisa, but it's much less romantic than how Lisa thinks about her. She's Lisa's best friend, but it's Jeff that she feels the strongest emotional obligation to. She defends him at every opportunity she gets, argues with Johnny about the way he treated him, and was worried about Jeff during the hitball game. She's desperate to find Jeff (and by extension Cody) even though she doesn't know about the supernatural stuff going on and has no reason to believe something suspicious has happened other than knowing dipping out of conversation randomly is out-of-character for Jeff. She definitely has a crush on him; when she imagines him on a date with Cody she's instantly filled with jealousy, but then quickly denies it to herself. She's probably straight, or at the very least not as interested in Lisa romantically as she is in Jeff.
And that's what makes Lisa and Violet's dynamic so fascinating to me. Lisa needs to be in control at all times, but the one person who she doesn't try to control, who she loves enough to treat like an equal, is also the person most likely to break her heart. She didn't take away Violet's agency, and Violet is using that agency to drift away from her, or at least drift towards other people. Lisa knows this, and resents this, but also never takes direct action herself and isn't willing to fully try and change things. If she really, really wanted to she might be able to make Violet stay closer by her side. But she cares about her far too much to try and control her like she controls everyone else, so instead she just keeps shooting her wistfull stares every other panel and doesn't do anything but give her free drinks at the Barfe.
These girls are 12. Damn.
and then she threw her phone at her in terror and made her parents buy her a smart phone that night

Prompt: Lisa updated the School Store’s stock after being inspired by a drink at the food court and getting her hands on the once banned fruity seltzer water.
Bonus: Whoever can afford the stars to drink it, start complaining about seeing weird purple shapes a couple hours later.
