Fences has a whole lot of racial slurs in it used by a black man in a historical context, but in lit class a white girl is reading the part of the main character. I just am really confused and uncomfortable about the whole thing, especially with the way the class seems to think it's really funny how she does a "black" voice. And I also wonder, how can this type of situation be avoided? How can we, as a mostly white middle class group of high school students in Georgia approach this material in a sensitive way? How should I as a white woman deal with this kind of thing? The play deals heavily with the consequences of systematic racism, and yet that very institution is being demonstrated amply in the classroom during the reading of said play.
