The spirits are here, he can feel them, their amorphous thoughts, panicked and trembling. They can feel his own fear, rising in the back of his throat, fuelling their own terror.

Bucky reaches for the chain around his neck, fumbling for his amulets. His fingers close around the two pieces of silver, fine and bright as the scars on his arm.

When Bucky was seven the Training Masters told him he had no magic, no potential, that he'd never be a witch. It wasn't a surprise. Witches came from certain families and a certain class, just like magic was sterile and ordered and familiars were obedient and servile. That was simply the way the world worked.

Bucky grew up and got on with living his mundane life, knowing he was one hundred percent magic free. Which meant it came as something of a shock when the familiar appeared in his living room, claiming Bucky was his witch. It meant the Masters had been wrong. It meant Bucky had magic.

It meant, just maybe, that wasn't the way the world had to work after all.

He glances up at Bucky, who is leaning against the counter and watching him with avid fascination. “Um…” Steve says around his index finger. There’s still a little icing on the bed of his fingernail, and he stops trying to work it off with his tongue. “You know those movies where the girl eats an eclair or something, and it’s really, like, sexually charged?” Bucky asks. Steve pulls his finger out of his mouth. He’s never seen that kind of movie, but the thought of Bucky eating an eclair is certainly… well, it lingers. “Uh?” “Yeah, well that was the exact opposite.” Steve scowls, and Bucky cackles gleefully. “You are something else, Steve.”

The sound of hoofbeats pulled Steve's head around and he froze.

A chestnut centaur, tail so long it would have brushed the ground if it wasn't flagged in challenge, was galloping through the fighting. He was carrying a human and a dryad on his back, cradling a tiny sprite in one arm, and holding a wicked looking metal spike in his other hand. A chimera lunged for him, and he reared, showing no hesitation as he smashed it with one front hoof, then stabbed down with the spike, sending it skittering back.

Steve broke out of his trance and flung the shield. It smashed into the chimera, flattening it, and the centaur bolted for the safety of the barricades, his passengers clinging tightly.

Another centaur. There was another centaur in New York. He'd thought he was the only one.
