Adventure Time is in the air again, this has been on my hard drive for like... a year waiting for me to put screenshots on each episode review. In the end I have decided I won’t. At least for now.

I do not get to invoke Hobbes’s Leviathan in this one, but I do talk a lot about wizards and gender, fucked-up Roman history and the stifling state of American animation and being gay (which is, admittedly, finally shifting a bit?) Actually I think I’ve thought more about wizards and gender since then, working that into a story even, but for now, this article can stand as-is!

one of the interesting things about reading golden age superman and batman is that before all the layered mythos and the wider expansion of their universes and the raising of their narrative stakes, they’re both tackling similar scale threats which makes it easier to contrast them. and i find it so striking just how conservative in tone batman is compared to superman in the nascent days. like compare the rhetoric used to describe superman’s vigilante motivations in a random issue from 1940:

this is so funny to me. tim’s first reaction to seeing jean-paul go through The Horrors of Catholic Psychosis is “wow… this must be some super skilled assassin technique that looks weird to the uninitiated but has some impressive function…”
