When Enough Is Enough: Why We Left the City Behind
There’s a moment most city people know. You’re sitting in traffic — a 15-minute drive that’s somehow become an hour — and something quietly snaps. Not dramatically. Just a slow, creeping realisation: this isn’t the life I actually want. That was us. We’d both grown up in the city. Worked there for years. Did all the things you’re supposed to do. And for a long time, we told ourselves it was…
"If people sat outside. and looked at the stars each night, I'll bet they'd live life a lot differently."
What it’s like being autistic (pretty awesome really)
You might think I’m not cut out for the intricate social web we live in. I’m not cut out to fit into its nooks and crannies, to lose myself in it without even realizing, to convince myself to feel what others tell me to. No, I’m its match. I feel the weight of the walls closing in around me and I don’t like it one bit. I struggle constantly with no light at the end of the tunnel. Some would say in vain. I don’t chase the light at the end up the tunnel. I make windows.
Mental Citizenship
Sometimes I don’t see things but when I do, I can’t stop. I gave up citizenship to my happy place for a series of probational student and work visas in neurotypical society. Observe, give, only take in secret. Stop for a split second and I find myself in the uncanny valley between me and them; but it doesn’t scare me anymore. I refuse to be intimidated by a world that can’t even understand a 22-year-old girl who just wants to succeed, contribute, and overcome, but more importantly, live. I’ll spend my life fighting for dual citizenship. You might think I’m spoiled for needing 2 residences but I’m just trying to make sense of a world where the place that’s livable is separate from the place that feels like home.

Trading Tales – The Pirate Boat
It’s an exciting time to be running a business on a boat. Like us, an increasing number of people are finding ways of daring to living differently; downsizing, decluttering and moving onto the waterways with the aim of making a living whilst cruising the cut. As promised in a recent post, following a request from Canal and River Trust and their Humans of the Waterways team, we’re going to be…

Living differently includes Familiar when you are willing to move away from all you thought you knew about your versions of Familiar. {notes from my conversation with my-self} 😎
