The living weapon is treated like dogs at a bad pound. They're kept in cages until someone comes round to 'adopt them' - usually by a Bad Guy agency looking for disposable agents. However there's one that keeps getting returned: your whumpee.
That is until someone finally rescues them for good.
Maybe it's the whumper who trains them to be a guard dog.
Maybe it's the caretaker who decides to spend the time and patience working with the whumpee
The command was simple. Precise. It meant 'be ready'. He was still amazed at how quickly his weapon went from a casual lean to sharp and at attention. Even her breathing shifted, at once even and calculated.
Her eyes found his, looking for silent command. He approached, appraising. Something in her seemed to track him, something in the way her shoulders and hips swayed as he moved around her.
"Can you hear the music?"
Watching the weapon's eyes, he was quietly amazed to see the pupils dilate and her cheeks darken with heat. Her hands flexed and clenched and her posture became more fluid.
"Yes, sir, and it is beautiful."
The fugue state, they called it. A state of being that was categorized by amnesia. She would not remember what happened now that he had Unholstered her.
This was a dangerous level of control. He was terrified and he was elated.
He stared for a long while, just taking her in. She was tall, nearly as tall as him, with muscle hidden under curvature and smooth lines. Her approachable appearance belied the ferocity he knew sat just beneath the surface, the tenacity and aggression trained into her over a decade.
The handler touched her, placed a hand along her lower back and pulled her towards him. She didn't resist. Couldn't. Wouldn't.
He pressed again, stepping back, and she followed. He led her around the room like this, guiding her like a dance partner.
"State your purpose."
"To serve my handler and the will of the Program." Her voice was dreamy and far away.
"You will do anything I say without question?"
"Yes, sir."
He took her hand in his, resting the other on his shoulder. He made a gentle circle, turned, spun his weapon in a soft waltz.
"You will keep me safe? Protect me?"
"Always. With my life, sir." She kept pace with ease despite her trance-like state.
"You will eliminate all threats if I say so?"
"Absolutely."
He drew her close, intimately close, and brought his mouth close to hers. Pausing, he felt her breath as a warmth over his lips and cheeks and he, at once, ached for her. His heartbeat quickened, his muscles tensing. His weapon seemed to notice, even in her condition, and stepped closer, arms adjusting to support him in return.
She did not speak, only held him in her embrace. He felt her draw his pistol from his hip. A quick glance at her face showed that she was scanning the room and he realized that she perceived his reaction as one to a danger she didn't see.
"Fugue." He spoke in a near whisper. Her eyes found his again.
"The song is over."
It was like a switch was flipped. Her posture relaxed and her eyes glazed. This was the part he was warned about. The guiding hand returned to her back as he followed her to the floor, her legs giving out beneath her as the adrenaline faded. The gun landed with a metallic clatter as it fell from loose fingers. Her breathing hitched once, twice, and the handler watched her swallow hard.
"I've got you. Safety on." He murmured. Her skin felt chilled as he found her pulse, but sweat had broken out on her forehead.
In the back of his mind, he cursed her training and the downward trend of her health that was endemic to that training. The Program had gotten better, smoother with its work, but refused to decommission Fugue despite this obvious defect.
She was too good at her job, too valuable an asset. There were only 8 active Weapons at this time and they couldn't afford to lose a single one.
Tabor looked down at his weapon, his attack dog, his government-issued killing machine.
And she looked back, barely focused, barely there.

It took a while for Danny to open his eyes again. Sam and Tucker stayed with him there next to the strange tree. They didn’t talk, too afraid that the Forest would hear them, too afraid that it would sense their anger and hate.
Finally, he stirred. “Sam? Tucker? What happened? Where are we?” he said, his voice raspy and his eyes still slightly foggy with sleep.
They looked at each other. “We’re not really sure where we’re at.” Sam started.
“Yeah, man.” Tucker said. “You just started wandering off and we followed. But then something…”
“Something happened.” Sam finished, breathing out shakily. “I think… I think someone tried to burn the Forest.”
“Yeah… there was…we caught a glimpse of burning trees. And the Forest started pulling from us. And we heard…” he paused, glancing at Sam, a pained expression in his eyes.
She closed her eyes for a second. “We heard you screaming.” She finished quietly. “And energy pulsed out.”
They were quiet for a moment. “When it was over,” she continued, “we found you, but…” she trailed off, glancing at Tucker.
“You looked different.” he said, not sure how to describe what Danny had looked like.
“What do you mean I looked different?” Danny asked, pushing himself to a seated potion and starting to look around more. He rubbed at his chest.
“You were…” Tucker trailed off again.
“You looked like a creature that would come through.” Sam finished, pushing the words out quickly.
Danny flinched. “What…”
Sam reached out to grab his hand. “It doesn’t matter.” she said, firmly. “You’re still Danny. And you look normal now. But… I’m not sure…” she glanced at Tucker.
“I think the Forest changed you. I think…you might turn into that other version at some point.” Tucker finished for her.
Sam glowered. “The Forest definitely did this. It wasn’t enough for her to use us, practically kill us. Now it’s changing us even more.”
Danny breathed out shakily, Sam doubted he was really processing anything clearly right now. He was still in shock. They all were.
“Us?” Danny asked, and Sam raised an eyebrow in silent question. “You said she changed ‘us.’ Are you guys also different?”
Now Sam rubbed at her own chest, noticing Tucker doing the same. “I think so.” Tucker said. “But not like you.”
“But why…” Danny trailed off, his gaze becoming unfocused. “She wants us to fight.” he answered himself, his voice eerily smooth, his gaze faraway. “It was just going to be me, but something went wrong.”
Sam bit her lip, unsure whether to try to shake Danny out of whatever stupor he’d fallen into.
“Danny?” Tucker said, hesitantly.
Danny blinked, focusing on them again, and Sam breathed out quietly in relief.
“She wants to use us to fight the monsters.” he said with such conviction that neither Sam or Tucker could bring themselves to disagree.
Not that they would. They felt it too, afterall. The sense that the Forest was calling them to something more, was calling for them to defend her.
Rage boiled in Sam then. How dare the Forest do this? How dare she expert them to fight for her after what she’d done to them? She clenched her fists, glancing at Tucker and Danny who had similar angry expressions.
No, they wouldn’t fight for her.
They would find a way to break free, a way to return to their bodies.
