Chapter Six

It wasn’t long before Pluto had arrived back, with a collection of empty bowls. Big Mama had told Pluto what she had expected of him that day, to watch her and make sure no harm came to her. Pluto appeared excited at the notion. For someone who looked so large and dangerous, he came across quite sweet. Almost childlike.

Big Mama had taken great pride in showing Lily her cleaning cupboard, and Lily was actually impressed. Lizard wasn’t joking when he said she collected bleach. There were at least 5 shelfs full of it, several mops, and several other cleaning products inside, including a trolley Big Mama was happy for her to use – asking Pluto to carry it across the sand for her before entering Lizard and Goggle’s house.

The house was directly opposite Big Mama’s but looked more worn. Some of the windows at the top of the stairs had been broken and even the front door seemed to be hanging on by only one hinge. Pluto had entered the home first, holding the broken door open for Lily as he did so. Big Mama wasn’t kidding, the place really was a mess.

There was dust, sand, rubbish, clothes, and this was just the living room. She could see where they had been sitting, the only places not covered in empty beer cans food wrappers. She could see why Big Mama had been avoiding this. It was the same layout as Big Mama’s house, the open door ahead of her she presumed went into the kitchen, and there was a staircase to a landing to her left with two bedrooms upstairs and she presumed a bathroom. She imagined the rest of the house wouldn’t be much different, she could see why Goggle was embarrassed to have her here.

She could think of worse jobs to do though, she enjoyed cleaning, she found it quite therapeutic. She turned to Pluto who was standing beside her with her new cleaning trolley. He had a sheepish grin on his face as he watched her. She smiled at him.

‘Thank you, Pluto, I’m going to start in here and work my way through I think.’ She looked around once again, where to start?

For the next hour she went to work on the living room, Pluto sitting on the floor and seemingly occupying himself with the roll of binbags he held. He was enjoying himself, handing her things she needed. She has successfully picked up all the rubbish she could have seen in the room. she’d found a coffee table and a collection of weapons hidden until the rubble of cans and rubbish. She made quick work of wiping down the surfaces and all she needed to do now was take the rubbish out and mop and dust.

She wiped the sweat from her forehead, the desert heat was filtering through the house, with no curtains she could see, there was nothing to block the sun from entering the house she stood in.

She took hold of one of the mops, making a start on the floor when she heard the hinges of the door creak behind her. Pluto was up with a start as Lizard entered the room. Lily watched him with curiosity as he inspected her work, he looked impressed, an eyebrow cocked with curiosity in her direction.

He walked towards her, his boots echoing off the newly cleaned floor as he did so, until he was so close she could feel his breath on her. Pluto made to come between them, slipping on the wet floor as he did so. He fell with a crash, earning an obnoxious laugh from Lizard in front of her. Lily went to help the poor mutant, but Lizard grabbed the top of her arm, holding her steadfast. His strength surprised her to the point she dropped the mop she was holding as he turned her towards him. He was so close to her their noses almost touched.

‘Liz…Lizard! Ma said you aint not allowed to touch Lily!’ Pluto clumsily tried to stand back up his, weight and height working against him as he did so.

Lizard shot him a disdainful look, his eyes were cold as he looked at Pluto, like ice, she could feel his hostility towards the man.

‘She aint your Ma! And I aint be doing anything naughty to our little Lily here.’ His gaze was on her once more. His cold blue eyes bearing into her own. Lily could feel her heart beating a mile a minute as he came even closer, bringing his face to the side of her own and breathing hotly into her ear.  ‘At least not yet anyway, blondie.’ He whispered in her ear, quietly enough for Pluto not to hear.

He buried his nose in her hair, inhaling her scent as he did so. She felt his free arm slip around her small waist, pulling him against his hard chest. she could feel his weapon press into her shoulder as he did so, the spiked row of ammo he carried with him wherever he went.

She felt the blush come to her cheeks, her heart beating so strongly she could hear it in her ears. And then it was over. He released her in one movement, barely giving Lily time to register what had happened as he continued through into his kitchen. Pluto stood dumbfounded behind her; he was jittering on the spot ready to pounce if needed. Though it was obvious how afraid Pluto was of Lizard, his strength was undeniable. It surprised her, being pressed against him like that, he was so masculine he could have been made of stone.

‘Lily…?’ Pluto voice brought her out of her thoughts. His worried glance brought her back to the task at hand.

‘I’m fine Pluto…’ She could hear her voice tremble as she spoke, as she picked up the mop from the floor and continued what she had been doing, a little more vigorously than she had been. She shot the kitchen an occasional glance, as if waiting for him to return, but she had heard the back door open and close as he had gone in there.

‘At least not yet…’ Lily couldn’t decide whether to be afraid or excited by his promise to her.

Chapter Five

It seemed like a dream when Lily awoke the next morning. She had stayed with Ruby that night, sharing the double bed with the small girl. She couldn’t remember the last time she had slept in a real bed. Her previous master had her sleep on the rug in the kitchen, like a dog.

They had all been so kind to her, even Papa Jupiter, spoke to her with respect. She noticed the looks she was receiving from them all though, Jupiter was untrusting of her, so was Goggle. There always seemed to be a pitiful glance from Big Mama, but Lizards were always so full of lust. She could be served on a plate to the man.

The desert sun had filtered through into the small room she shared with Ruby. The curtains were worn, as were the walls and bed sheets, but she could tell that Ruby had taken pride in her bedroom. She had a collection of items scattered around, things she received from her ‘friends’ as she called them. She sounded sad when she said it though. Lily wasn’t sure she wanted to ask how she came to find some of them, were there others like her, that the slave catchers had found? Or was it another reason? She kept thinking back to the smell of the blood in the basement, after finding out they were cannibals it wasn’t far of her to assume it could have been human blood she was smelling down below.

Lily swung her legs out of the bed, tensing as she did so. Her wounds were healing nicely but they still felt tight. The bleeding had stopped though – she was sure Big Mama would be happy about that. She climbed out of the white nightgown she had slept in the night before and put on the yellow summer dress that Big Mama had given her. It was the nicest thing she had ever worn, with this and her pyjama night gown she couldn’t believe her luck. Comfortable clothing which still looked good. She had felt so lucky but had to remind herself that this couldn’t be forever.

Ruby stirred behind her, stretching her arms up as Lily did up the buttons on the front of her summer dress. It fit her beautiful, complimenting her curves and breasts but still giving enough room for her to be comfortable.

Ruby had a collection of hairbrushes on her bedside counter, she used one to brush through her knotty blonde hair so she would look presentable. She was glad for the room in her new dress, the heat of the day was already growing, something she hadn’t noticed until the night before. The heat of the desert was intense.  

Today was her first day as their official slave. Today was the day she would prove her worth to these people, who had been nothing but kind to her. The irony of a cannibalistic mutant family being the only people nice to her in her life wasn’t lost on her. Her anxiety remained, the slave catchers had not caught her yet, she had been missing for over a day yet, she was impressed, this village was hidden so well they didn’t know it existed. She hoped it would be the case, she didn’t want anything to happen to this family.

‘Good morning.’ Ruby yawned as she spoke, bringing Lily out of her thoughts.

‘Good morning, Ruby. Would you like me to help you get ready for the day?’ Lily smiled softly at her as she motioned to Ruby’s dress, she had hung ready for her the night before.

Ruby stared blankly at the dress and then towards Lily before confusion laced her features.

‘Ya mean get dressed?’ She laughed nervously as she said it.

‘Yes. I am your slave now, so I can be at hand to help you with whatever you need.’

Ruby looked at her up and down once again, before laughing awkwardly. Ruby moved quickly, slipping off her own night gown and throwing on her red polka dot dress in one movement. She put her red hood on over it as she usually did. She was nimble with her mutated hands, it looked awkward, but it worked for her.

‘Ya don’t need to help me get dressed Lily; I can do that ma self.’ She smiled kindly at her, before taking her hand in hers and leading her out into the hallway. The smell of food wafted through the house as they descended the stairs and walked into the kitchen. Big Mama was there, whipping up something in the kitchen with her apron on. Mercury and Venus sat at the table playing some kind of damaged board game they had found from somewhere.

Ruby said her good mornings to everyone, getting their attention as she took her seat at the side of Mercury. Lily stood awkwardly in the doorway as Big Mama flashed her a kind smile.

‘That dress suits you! You look pretty in its girl.’ She spoke very kindly to her; she had a motherly feel to her.

‘Thank you. Please allow me to take over from you, as your slave I would be happy to do all household chores for you.’ She spoke politely, with a small smile on her face as she met Big Mama’s eyes.

‘Sit ya self-down girl. I’m nearly finished anyway; you’ll need ya energy today being at Lizard and Goggle’s place I tell ya.’

Lily wasn’t sure what to do at first. She had never been fed or invited to sit for breakfast before by any owner she’d had before. She looked anxiously at the table just as a sudden rush of people entered the kitchen.

Papa Jupiter came from behind her, taking his seat at the head of the table, Cyst and Pluto, who she had not spoken to yet entered through the back door of the kitchen, towering over everyone for their breakfast to go. Three plates, one for each of them and one to take to Big Brain back in his cabin. Pluto stared at her with excitement as Cyst just nodded in acknowledgement. She kept her face nonchalant, but she had been surprised by their mutations. Their sizes each were intimidating, and Cyst’s mutations looked painful for him, or was it the desert sun that had caused his skin to be like that? She had not met Big Brain yet either, though Big Mama advised her to stay clear of him, he wasn’t the welcoming sort she had said.

Goggle rushed in from behind her at speed, nearly taking her out as he did so, taking his seat beside Venus and then Lizard entered, making sure to brush past her slowly as he did so. Flashing her a sly smile as he did so, she smiled back without even noticing she had done so, she was starting to enjoy the attention she was receiving from him, though of course she couldn’t act on it. She thought him very handsome though. He took his seat next to Goggle and then Big Mama started to serve.

‘Sit down with ya girl, Ruby wont bite!’ She laughed as she motioned towards the empty seat next to Ruby, opposite Lizard with Papa Jupiter at her other side. Big Mama sat at the other head of the table between Venus and Mercury.

‘We’ve got porridge this morning, courtesy of Jeb. Make sure to be thanking him next time ya all see him.’

There was a look and a groan between Lizard and Goggle before a shared snigger at her statement.

‘Boys ya better not have been stirring trouble with him again.’ Papa Jupiter shot them a look, earning a disgruntled look from Goggle in response.

‘It’s Ruby that ya gotta watch there, she just loves to mess with him.’ Lizard sneered at her, earning a shocked reaction from the small girl.

‘I do not!’ She shouted across at him, gaining yet another sneer from him. It was obvious Lizard disliked the small girl.

‘That’s enough! Don’t matter who be doing it, Jeb is good to us, he puts food on the table, treat him with respect.’ Big Mama leant across from behind Lily, filling her bowl with the steaming Porridge, a good-sized portion of it as well. She couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten, let alone a decent sized meal.

‘Now dig in everyone.’ Big Mama had taken her seat once again, Lily didn’t have to be asked twice. She picked up her spoon and took a mouthful. Savouring every inch of it, she couldn’t remember tasting anything as good as this bowl of porridge at this time. One spoonful after the other, she finished it within minutes, her stomach welcoming the well needed nourishment.

‘Girl can eat.’ Lizard made a statement from across from her, locking eyes with Lily as she looked in his direction. She had gotten so carried away she had polished off the entire portion within minutes. Everyone on the table was glancing in her direction as they continued with their own food.

Lily felt the blush on her face, the embarrassment she now felt at finishing her food so quickly in front of them. Lizard only smiled though, a different kind of smile she hadn’t seen from him yet. There was a kindness in it, he was amused with her she could tell that much.

‘S…Sorry.’ She spoke meekly as she said it, she should have shown more manners, she was just so used to food being taken from her if she hadn’t finished it quickly enough.

‘Don’t apologise girl, y’all need all that to prepare yourself for their mess of a house.’ Big Mama laughed in response, motioning towards Goggle and Lizard.

‘She’s cleaning our place today?!’ Goggle appeared outraged at the statement, a look of embarrassment on his flat features.

‘Well, I haven’t been doing it, and I can tell ya haven’t been either!’ There was a giggle from across the table from the little ones, a slight snigger from Papa Jupiter next to Lily also.

‘I’ll be sending Pluto with her as well, make sure nothing happens to her whilst she be there boys.’ Big Mama flashed a look at Lizard as she made that statement, he rolled his eyes in response.

‘He’ll be back once he’s fed Big Brain Lily, then I’ll show you my cleaning cupboard, I’m quite proud of it.’ She smiled kindly at her, gaining a smile back.

‘Some people collect stamps, Ma collects bleach.’ Lizard joked under his breath to no one in particular, gaining a smirk from Lily – he noticed immediately.

‘Well then, best start the day.’ Big Mama collected her plate as she stood, followed by the others as they finished eating.

Lily stood, collecting the other plates as well, taking Lizards now empty bowl from him, and seeing a look of amusement in his eyes as she did so. This would be an interesting day.

Chapter Three

Liberty had done her best to fight Lizard, but his strength was too much for her. He had dragged her from the car and through the desert to a small village hidden within the valleys. She watched as Cassie and Faye had been pulled out of the car by the other two mutants. The first the one she had seen in the car window and the other a large man with a facial deformity. Austin, however, was nowhere to be seen. Had they already taken him?

She ached all over, from the crash and from the desert floor she was dragged across. They had been chained up in a basement of some kind in the middle of this village. Faye was still unconscious in the corner of the room whilst Cassie continued to weep to herself. There was still no sign of Austin.

They had been rough with them, making sure the shackles around the wrists were tight and also low enough to the ground so they couldn’t stand comfortably. She tried to console Cassie but there was no hope, she was deaf to her in her panic.

She could hear footsteps above them, walking up and down the wooden flooring, dust falling as they did so. There was a foul smell in there, like blood and rotting meat, it almost made her want to gag. She had to be optimistic though, perhaps these people were just protecting their property, maybe they had taken a wrong turn and gone onto private property. Though it seemed odd that the gas man didn’t say anything to them when they stopped there, Jeb was his name she thought.

The door flung open upstairs, and a heavy-footed older male came down to them. He wore an oversized trench coat and had a long greying beard. Behind him came a large woman who wore an obvious black wig on her head, they both wore a stern expression.

They centred on her, being the only one really capable of speaking. ‘What is your name girl.’ The man spoke first, deep in voice.

‘Liberty.’ She forced out, inwardly wondering if she should have given them her real identity. The two looked between one another, the woman coming forward, bending down to her level, and brushing a hair out of her face.

‘You banged ya head up really good Liberty, gonna have to clean ya up.’ The woman was soft spoken but remained stern in her expression.

‘Thank you…um…my friend… she hasn’t regained consciousness yet…’ Liberty motioned towards Faye’s limp body in the corner of the room, shaking her bloodied blonde hair out of the woman’s grasp.

‘She’ll be alright honey, just a bang to the head, like yours.’ The woman headed over to Faye, as the man remained where he stood, gazing at her with a quizzical expression.

‘Where are we?’ Liberty tried speaking to the man, but he remained silent.

‘Ya in the Test Village sweetheart. This be our home and ya trespassed. We don’t take kindly to strangers in our land.’ The woman came back over her, a displeased look on her face.

‘We never meant to; I swear! We thought it would get us to California quicker, I’m so sorry, please let us go!’ her voice broke at the end, tears threatening to fall.

‘I’m ‘fraid that won’t be possible Liberty. You belong to us now; it be up to us what happens to you three now.’ There was an almost sympathetic look on the woman’s face.

‘Austin…’ Cassie squeaked from behind them all, getting everyone’s attention. She continued to cry heavily, forcing the words out.

‘You said three, where’s Austin!’ her voice was louder this time, shouting almost as she demanded to know where her boyfriend was.

They looked between themselves at her statement. ‘You said there was only three!’ The woman spoke in a raised whisper to the man.

‘That’s what Liz told me.’ He looked displeased at the woman before turning and storming up the basement stairs, the woman following behind.

Cassie cried after them, calling Austin’s name. They didn’t know, which meant that Austin was still out there somewhere. They had hope.

Chapter Two

Liberty awoke suddenly, her head pounding as she observed the situation, they were in. She and her friends had been on a road trip, travelling to California when suddenly her friend’s car had reared of the road, flipping and now lay on it’s roof in the pounding heat of the desert sun.

Her ears were ringing as she looked around herself, hanging upside down painfully with her seatbelt digging into her shoulder. Her friend Faye hung unconscious next to her, blood dripping down her forehead from the wound she must have sustained during the accident. Behind her, her friend’s girlfriend Carrie lay screaming on top of the roof, seemingly not wearing her seatbelt when the accident had occurred. She appeared surprisingly unhurt with only a few cuts and bruises which were not forming. Her friend Austin, however, was nowhere to be seen.

Liberty stretched down, releasing her seatbelt, and causing her to fall uncomfortably against the car roof alongside Cassie, swearing under her breath as she did so.

‘Cassie! Cassie! Please calm down, you have to help me get Faye out of the car, we have to get out!’ she was shouting at Cassie, trying to get her attention, trying to get her attention from whatever her eyes were fixated on. She paid no attention to her though, screaming manically as she pointed out of the open door in front of her, manically looking between Liberty and what lay outside.

‘It’s okay Cassie, if Austin’s out there we’ll get him okay, we just need to get Faye out first! Please!’ Cassie’s screams only got louder though as Liberty’s attention was pulled out towards the open doorway.

Goggle had appeared in the doorway, eyes landing on the two girls, a manic grin on his features. Liberty had no time to react, the mutant’s appearance had shocked her, doing her best not to show disdain at his appearance.

‘Looks like we have a full car his Liz!’ his voice was rough, laughing manically as he spoke.

‘Pl… Please can you help us?’ her words came out as barely a whisper. ‘Oh, don’t you worry my pretty, we’ll help you alright.’ The voice came from behind her, the door beside her opening abruptly as she was pulled out of the car by Lizard, his leather gloves gripped painfully against her bare arms.

She allowed him to pull her out of the car, not knowing what was to come. She glanced up at the man, his appearance, different as the previous man’s had been. She took him in, taking a breath before steadying herself. She tried to break free from him, to go back to the car for Faye, to help them but it was starting to dawn on her now, they weren’t here to help them.

Chapter One

Lizard had lived in the hills all his life. He always preferred the mountain terrain and sandy landscapes to anything that could be beyond the desert he had spent his life in. He was comfortable, knew his surroundings, knew his safe points.

He was a hateful, murderous mutant with sun burnt leather skin and a deformed cleft lip. Other than this though he had been blessed not to have developed any further physical mutations just as the others in his family. Their family lived together in a little village within the ravine of the hills. The protected one another, hunted with one another, and thrived together. Even they saw him though as a vicious man. They hunted to survive but Lizard took more enjoyment from it than any of them. Once he had tortured a man for 8 days, taking enjoyment as he skinned the man layer by layer. That's just the sort of man he was.

Lizard walked towards the cliff edge, gazing along the landscape in front of him. Alongside him was his brother, Goggle. A mutant, just short of him, physically not at all mutated except for his face. His nose was elongated and long, with only two holes where his nostrils should be. Where Lizard was the best hunter, Goggle was the best watcher. He would sit along the cliff edge for days, watching for any potential victims to notify the family. His eyesight was what they presumed to be mutated. He could see better than any of them, for miles at a time. Before even for them a dot could be seen on the horizon.

Goggle grunted to Lizard, patting him on the leg from his sitting position. He pointed out towards the horizon muttering only one word, 'Food.' Lizard gave one of his manic laughs before leaping on the spot. He reached for the walkie talkie on his side and sent the message out to his family. 'It's breakfast time.
