Jervis Tetch | The Mad Hatter

Basics:

Hair Color: blond

Sexuality: grey-asexual biromantic

Gender: genderqueer, uses he/him/his

Other: buck teeth, ambidextrous

Personality Traits:

Neutral: often lost in his own imagination, easy to startle, emotional, thinks before acting, tries to avoid conflict

Positive: polite, protective, creative, fairly loyal, kind (for a Rogue, that is)

Negative: obsessive, nervous, cowardly, hidden temper

Biography:

Even as a child, Jervis loved the Wonderland books. His twin sister Joyce shared this passion, and the two would spend hours re-enacting the plot and adding onto the story. Being children, Jervis and Joyce both believed that Wonderland was real; they vowed that they would find a way into the magical world and live there. 

The twins’ desire to escape the real world intensified when Joyce fell ill. A rare disease, the doctors said. Despite intensive treatments, Joyce’s condition worsened. On the day she died, Joyce was alone in her hospital room with Jervis, their parents having stepped into the hall to speak with a doctor. With her last breaths, Joyce told Jervis not to worry because she would be waiting for him in Wonderland. “So come find me, okay?”

With the loss of his sister, Jervis’ grip on reality loosened. He would not believe that she was truly dead, and his desire to get to Wonderland (and now to Joyce) intensified. He would find Wonderland, no matter what it took. For Joyce is out there somewhere, wandering like Alice, so he--Jervis--shall become the Mad Hatter--and drink tea with her once again.

Presently, Jervis is often lost in his own imagination, as he dislikes living in the “real world.” He does not see other people as being quite “real,” either, though the Rogues are an exception. Jervis is obsessive, easy to read, and prone to cowardice and low self-esteem. Despite these more negative traits, he can go to great lengths to protect those he cares about. If he wasn’t a Rogue, Jervis would be thought of as kind, caring, and polite. 

When committing crimes, Jervis is more likely to flee than to fight, as he prefers to avoid conflict whenever possible. However, that does not mean he can’t fight. To watch the Hatter fight is akin to watching a skilled dancer move their body to a rhythm that, if it could be heard, would drive one mad. Jervis “dances” with his weapon of choice: a double-bladed ax. (“Off with their heads!”)

And now, a twist~

Though still unbeknownst to him, Jervis is right: Wonderland is real, and Joyce is alive.

Well, kind of.

The Joyce Tetch that Jervis spend his childhood with did indeed die when they were seven, but as any fan of one who has dealt with DC Comics knows, there are a whole lot of Earths. 

On one Earth in particular, it was Jervis who fell ill as a child. When he died, Joyce swore she would find her way to Wonderland and reunite with him. 

And she did. On her 23rd birthday, Joyce fell down a rabbit-hole of her own creation and made it to Wonderland. But although she searched everywhere for Jervis, she found no sign of him.

It was only after an encounter with the Red Queen that Joyce began to understand. The Queen, like all the denizens of Wonderland, referred to Joyce as “Alice,” and treated her as such. Joyce had been more than happy to embrace this role, but her fate was to be far different than the literary Alice’s. After all, that Alice never did end up losing her head to the Red Queen. 

Joyce wasn’t so fortunate. There was the sharp glint of a blade, and then darkness. It was only the March Hare--or rather, March Harriet--that saved Joyce, sewing her head back on after the Queen had left her outside of the castle to rot.

Still, every cloud has a silver lining, especially in Wonderland. For during the short while that Joyce was dead, she caught glimpses of Jervis, alive in a strange city.

In an instant, and with absolute certainty, Joyce knew two things: that the Jervis she saw was not the one she had lived alongside, and that it did not matter. 

Because their worlds, their pasts, were the same--save for which of them had died as a child.

When Joyce awoke, enchanted stitches ringing her neck, she had a new goal: get to Jervis’ Earth and return to Wonderland with him. 

After all, every Alice needs a Mad Hatter by her side.

2. Which OCs names do you like the least? Outburn, but only his civilian name because he doesn’t have one. Nothing really fits him :/

3. Is there significant meaning behind your MCs name? Hm...Spider kinda works here. He’s based on two things: being a “spider on the wall” and the quote that goes something like, “what is normal to the spider is chaos to the fly.”

10. If your wip had a fandom what would you want it to be like? (some examples: size, audience, content, etc) We all know that bigger is not necessarily better when it comes to fandoms, so perhaps medium is the way to go. I’d say small, but that can range anywhere from a couple thousand to like.....six people and a gerbil. Audience-wise, I guess young adults and adults? As for content, probably the usual: all kinds of fanart and fanfic, memes, etc. I’d lose it if someone made a song. Most of all, though, I’d want a chill fandom. Active, but chill. One that kind of keeps to itself, as well because I’m still haunted by 2012 era tumblr

1. Which OCs names do you like the most? Hoodie I’m so glad you asked this, because I am still head over heels for the name you gave Colette!! It’s just *chef’s kiss* perfect for her. Thank you again 💖

7. Which OC wasn’t supposed to exist but captured your heart immediately? This is a toss up between Kay, Joyce Tetch, and Spider. Kay was meant to be a generic villain in a fic I never finished, Joyce was (at first) just a major part of my version of Jervis Tetch’s backstory, and Spider was a joke.

Of course, things went from 0 to 60 real fuckin quick--but I wouldn’t have it any other way✨
