I loved Lizzo from the get go since she had a concert and performed Batches and Cookies and threw homemade cookies into the audience! Then she played her flute!
Album Review of the Week: Lizzo - Lizzobangers (2013)
Lizzobangers is Lizzo's debut album back when she was a lil twinkle in the Twin Cities' eye (Minnesota, USA). It incorporates a lot more hip hop than her later more mainstream works. In fact, this style has since been revisited on her latest surprise album from just last week My Face Hurts From Smiling.
The album's production is really great, everything is super crisp and each element is the volume it should be which is unfortunately hard to find sometimes!
The songs have tons of energy as well, the intro track Lizzie Borden has this machine gun style vocal delivery that really wakes you up and gets your attention for the rest!
W.E.R.K., Pt. II keeps that pulsating energy up with this really fun vocal hook in the beginning and tons of interesting vocal inflections throughout.
Wat U Mean has this marching band style instrumental and a dark almost spooky chorus.
T-Baby is a little more forgettable but that doesn't necessarily mean bad. The previous songs had so much of a punch this one kind of gets lost in the shuffle.
Lizzo breaks out the flute in the background of Be Still. I love the vocal inflection towards the end, it's super sassy and silly!
Faded has a bit more aggressive energy, the instrumental is really great and energetic. The last minute or so has this really fun euphoric build up that leads into a chill ending.
Hot Dish is some standard rap fare, almost sounds like a freestyle (from my limited knowledge of rap styles, lol).
Make Way is more sing-songy and has a guest rapper that does some really cool stuff by repeating words in a stuttery way. I tried looking up what that is called but just got results on how singing can help people not stutter anymore! It's not scatting though since it is real words, anyway... This song has a really nice vibe!
Batches & Cookies was the song that always stood out to me when I first started listening to Lizzo. The way it repeats is pretty satisfying, although the whistling instrumental can definitely get annoying! And the "ya, sure, ya know" is a fun little nod to the Minnesota accent.
Pants Vs. Dress has a pretty manic and rushed flow in the beginning, after a while she seems to find her rhythm a little bit better and then it's easier to groove along.
Go is more in the R&B vein and slows the energy way down, although it has some great harmonies!
Bloodlines creates a bridge between the rap and R&B. Mostly R&B but has some rapping in the verses. The instrumental is really interesting with the vinyl scratching, creates a nice atmosphere.
The album closes out with Bus Passes and Happy Meals. We don't quite get the energy back from the beginning of the album but this is still a great midtempo rap with fun vocal harmonies and a good flow.
This was a fantastic debut from Lizzo! Much better than the next album, 2015's Big Grrrl Small World. I didn't like that one nearly as much.
Collection Spotlight: Lizzo - Lizzobangers (2013)
I became a fan of Lizzo right as she was gaining popularity with "Good As Hell" in late 2016. I was living in St. Paul Minnesota at the time so it was a great way to learn that Minneapolis has an amazing music scene! Obviously we have Prince and some of Janet Jackson's most legendary albums, but Lizzo helped me learn that there is an entire scene happening around here!
Her debut album, Lizzobangers, was on my "wantlist" for a long time although I wasn't convinced I would ever acquire it since the price shot up after she became mainstream. However, I was perusing my favorite record store - Cheapo (either the Blaine or Snelling location, this particular time it was Snelling) and I came across this for $25! I thought that was certainly a fair price given the scarcity of this album and snatched it right up!
I miss early Lizzo
