“Hey Lloyd.” Kai asked.
“Yeah?” Lloyd said.
He was shapeshifted into a teenager at the moment, but Kai could see holding it was causing strain.
“What’s wrong?” Kai asked.
Lloyd only had trouble holding his teen form when something was wrong. Kai was pretty sure he had gotten enough sleep, enough food, and they had just leveled an entire rebel camp, so he it couldn’t be a lack of destruction causing oni stress.
So that left sickness and injury.
“Nothing.” Lloyd said.
Kai raised an eyebrow.
“I just feel a little nauseous. No big deal.” Lloyd said, trying to push passed Kai.
“Look at me.” Kai said.
Lloyd let Kai grab his face and look at his eyes.
“Why are your eyes dull?” Kai asked.
“What?” Lloyd asked.
“Did you get hurt at all during that raid?” Kai asked.
“Just one little nick, why?” Lloyd said, showing Kai the tiny slash on the under side of his arm.
Kai grabbed the arm and look at the wound closely.
“I think this is poisoned.” Kai said.
Lloyd’s eyes were wide and watery.
“Lloyd you need to let go of the teen form and conserve your energy, ok? I’ll call Zane and we’ll fix it. There’s only so many poisons that work on you.” Kai explained.
Lloyd hesitated. He hated being a kid in public. With a select few exceptions, he only really let himself stay in kid form when he was at home surrounded by his family. It made him feel so vulnerable and he hated to remind people of how young he really was. It could paint a giant target on himself if he wasn’t careful. While that could be fun at times, it wasn’t something he liked to do without meaning to. He’d already been targeted with a poison. It had to be targeted on him, Kai wasn’t lying when he said there was only a handful of poisons that worked on him, and most of them didn’t work on a normal human.
“Lloyd, I promise, I’ll protect you. You have to trust me though.” Kai said.
Kai who had picked Lloyd up long before he learned to shapeshift. Kai who had burned anyone that made Lloyd feel unsafe, even as the ability for people to do that dwindled. Kai who had given Lloyd his own blood once when they were held captive and he felt himself starting to slip, long before the Elemental Regime had conquered Ninjago.
Lloyd nodded and left his shapeshift drop. Reaching tired arms up for Kai to pick him up.
“Don’t worry. Once Zane figures out what they used, we’ll all make sure to find the source of it and destroy everyone and everything there.” Kai promised as he carried Lloyd back to his motorcycle “No one gets away with hurting our little brother.”
Lloyd nodded sleepily, taking comfort in Kai’s violet promises.
