Settle Down Cafe, Newcastle
Settle down cafe is on the cute and pedestrianised Thornton Street, in the centre of Newcastle. It is on the ground floor of an old brick building which has lots of character.
Inside the vibe is light and laid-back, with feel good soul tunes on in the background and walls full of charismatic art done by locals, customers and staff.
They have a cosy room in the back which is available for meet-ups, community groups and general gatherings. The mixture of 70′s wallpaper and extraterrestrial animal art sets the perfect scene for historical and futuristic to combine in collaborative discussion and practice.
Their menu is comforting, healthy and fresh, and their cakes from close-by Sugar Down Bakery are amazing. For breakfast I went with a classic/basic bowl of porridge, made with soya milk. This was especially sweet and delicious and I remember remarking ‘the nicest bowl of porridge I have had in a while’, which is always a good sign.
With their support for local projects and initiatives such as funding the new star and shadow cinema and the petition to keep the Town Moor as it is, Settle Down is yet another great example of a community where creativity with a conscience is alive and thriving.
