We’re under a “winter weather warning” (in S.E. Virginia).
Okay, so snow and “winter weather” in southeast Virginia is nothing like “winter weather” in New England, or the northern regions of the Midwest.
But when I first moved here 20-something years ago, we’d get at least a couple days in late January / early February when there’d be a layer of snow five snowflakes thick that would stick to the ground and last until the afternoon warmed up enough for the snow to melt. And that’s what I’d come to expect.
(”climate” is what you come to expect, “weather” is what it is doing right now)
Last year, there wasn’t a single day all winter when the ground was covered in the white stuff (all the white stuff melted and turned transparent before it hit the ground). And this year, so far, there hasn’t been a single flake coming from the sky. ... Last week, the temperature was around 65 F / 18 C (!)
So I’m breathing the tiniest sigh of relief, when the weather report says we may get 2″ - 4″ of snow, tonight (with March right around the corner).
Still, I’m slowly learning not to expect to have snow in the winter, anymore.
