Last week I had super rush for my first ever join publication “Proudly Made in Bangladesh- Approaches towards Sustainable Fashion in a developing country“. Alhamdulillah the Demo version is ready for the “Local International” exhibition at Berlin. I am glad that the co-author of this book is my friend, classmate and colleague Md. Shamsad Hasnine. The traditional craft culture of Bangladesh has been practicing sustainability for decades. Traditional practices such as recycling old clothing and fabric scraps into housewares and toys have been commonplace for centuries. Also, many traditional practices within Bangladesh’s textile heritage are environmentally friendly and energy saving, such as hand weaving or the use of natural dyes. Currently, an even more sustainable fashion industry is growing in Bangladesh as the national ready-made garment (RMG) sector explores many forward-thinking practices.
The programme “Local International” provided an opportunity to connect with numerous local fashion brands and industries. During the course of our project research we collected articles, documentaries, and best practice examples of sustainability-related initiatives within the Bangladesh clothing and fashion scene.
The book “Proudly made in Bangladesh” is a showcase of these findings. This exhibition presents a preview of the forthcoming book. “Proudly made in Bangladesh” illustrates different ways sustainability is interpreted in the local clothing sector of Bangladesh while offering a critical view on the barriers currently obstructing a sustainable practice. A discussion of opportunities to overcome these challenges will also be a part of this book. Moreover, an interactive map and contact details will be included to offer the opportunity to directly connect with sustainable companies and practitioners. For future editions we plan to update and successively expand the contents with involvement from other collaborators.
