Almost 50 years after an unknown man’s body was found floating in the Saginaw River, his name has been returned to him thanks to DNA. Daniel G. Garza-Gonzales was a Vietnam War veteran who was wounded during the conflict. After returning to America, he left Fort Worth, Texas, hoping to find work in Flint, Michigan. His family never heard from him again.
The 56-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to his leg.
They arrested Chariaja J. Smith, 18, and a 15-year-old boy as suspects, and seized a pistol during the search.
Smith and her minor codefendant have both been arraigned in Saginaw County District Court on charges of armed robbery, conspiracy to commit that crime, and two counts of felony firearm. The first two charges are life offenses, while a conviction of felony firearm mandates a minimum two-year sentence to be served consecutively with any related stint.
Smith’s bond is $60,000 cash-surety, while her minor codefendant’s bond was denied.
