Flashback to this morning: the tea I went with was Lochan Tea Sourenee Clonal Delight, second flush 2019. A Darjeeling (obviously) that was MOSTLY oxidized and MOSTLY whole leaf. Two of my favorite things, especially this neck deep into autumn. Notes of wood, sharp stone fruit, and muscatel auras abound. Back to the well this aftenoon. Lochan Tea Margaret's Hope Moonlight - a 2019 second flush Darjeeling. Many gardens in the region have a "Moonlight"-like offering, and what's funny is that they all have a similar processing recipe. Mid-oxidized buds strewn in with the more heavily oxidized leaves. It's a style I favor. I love surprises. I found this bag in my pantry yesterday. Giddapahar Imperial Muscatel, second flush ... 2017. (Gifted to me by Lochan Tea.)Yes, a Darjeeling second flush from the year of the big regional strike. Not much was produced, but I got some before production ceased in late-June of that year. So... kinda rare. . . I had no clue how well this would've "aged" in two years. Rule o' thumb: Darjeelings don't usually keep beyond a year. (Blame hard withers and clonal material, etc.) . . But this... ? . . This held up pretty well. Sure, it required a ten-second pre-wash, and about a third of the muscatel was lost to time, but it still had the depth of character. . . Aaaaaaaaah yeah! Finally got my hands on some 2019 second flush Latumoni Assam. As some of you remember, this teensy garden produced some of my favorite Assams last year. High and above anything else I tried. I was lucky enough to try a whole year's worth of their product line. . . I was worried I wouldn't get to try one this year, given the late Spring harvest, and the quickness with which product was snatched up. (Apparently, I'm not the only one who likes this garden.) But, luckily, I found a sample amidst my second flush delivery from Lochan Tea. . . The leaves appear to mlbe about FGFOP grade, - cut but still tippy as all heck. The brew is *DARK* copper. Smell amd taste? All malt and honey with a dash of jaggery. . .
