You left Loki to the task of getting the realm back in order from the chaos of Hela’s visit and Odin being stripped of his title. You had other work to do. Hogun and Thor carried the two valkyrie to the healing wing, following you there. In Frigga’s absence, you were ruler of the healing wing. You would take over for her when she was ready to step down. You had a feeling that now that Odin had been stripped of his titles, that day would come sooner than anticipated.
Everything had a price.
At the moment, the price was coming due for your return to the land of the living. Everything was moving so fast. You’d prepared for this, but it never felt like enough. You’d thought that you would have more time. Instead, you had to put on your big girl panties and deal with the new responsibilities that had fallen into your lap.
And worry about being queen later.
Right now, you had valkyrie to heal.
You led the boys to one of the rooms in the healing wing. This particular room had two beds already set up and you thanked the Norns for having competent assistants sometimes. Thor and Hogun laid the valkyrie carefully in the beds while you called for your assistants. You kicked Thor and Hogun out and quickly got to work assessing Hugin and Munin and healing them. They were severely malnourished and weak from their service to Odin. He’d kept them trapped in raven form for far too long. It left them weak, left them trapped at the ages that they’d been when he’d ordered them in one form.
It wasn’t hard to get them stabilized, your magic was strong, stronger here than on Midgard, but it would be awhile before they were back up to full strength.
The valkyrie looked to be teenagers, younger than you, closer to Wanda’s age. Though you knew they were centuries and centuries older than you and Loki. They both had raven black hair. That was about where the similarities ended. You knew that at one point, they’d been fierce warriors. Now they were frail, emaciated, haunted. One of them looked older than the other, stern, like a young Professor McGonagall. That one, you learned, was Hugin. Munin seemed kinder and more innocent.
You worked for hours healing them, bringing them back to health. They would have to work to regain lost muscle and strength, but you would give them as much magical help as you could.
“Hela sent you back to help us,” Hugin said, hours later when both women were sitting up eating a hearty stew and bread. It wasn’t a comment. She somehow knew of your bargain with Hela.
You nodded and your wings shifted behind you. “Hela agreed to send me back if I would help her and help the valkyrie,”
Hugin considered that while she continued working on her meal. From what you could gather, it was one of the first proper meals she’d had in ages. Both valkyrie were savoring it. “Our sisters were killed when Odin forced them to fight their Queen. We’re bound to the throne of Asgard, but Hela is our patron goddess. Our loyalties span between those two places,” she explained to you. “There was no way the valkyrie would win a war against Hela. He sent them to die. All of our sisters, besides us,”
“How could he do such a thing?” You asked, horrified. Hugin had spoken the words matter of factly, but you could see the pain in her eyes at the memory of watching the other valkyrie go off to die.
“It was the only way to weaken Hela enough for him to banish her. The cost was too high and our queen did not deserve such treatment. Not when her only crime was being what Odin made her. He has a habit of banishing and hiding problems instead of dealing with them. He banished Hela, banished Thor, hid the truth about Loki’s heritage. All of his problems could have been avoided so easily,” Hugin said, clearly displeased with Odin. You didn’t blame her. Odin had deserved what he’d gotten.
You nodded and sighed. “Hela wishes for the valkyrie to be welcome and return to Asgard. Of course, they are welcome, but… I don’t know how to do the rest,” you admitted. You and Loki would gladly welcome the valkyrie back to Asgard, if they would come.
Hugin smirked up at you and you saw fight and determination in her eyes. She would rebuild everything with you to how it should be and fight by your side. “First, Munin and I will heal. We will teach you what it means to be a valkyrie, reopen the training grounds here,”
Munin perked up, eager, innocent, so very young looking. “And then we will welcome our sisters home,” she said softly, her voice ethereal and dream-like. Her mind needed to heal from being in raven form for so long as her body did.
As both of them did.
You gave them both grateful looks, relieved and awed by them. “Thank you, both. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it-“
Hugin held up her hand. “Don’t thank us yet, fledgling. There is a lot for you to learn before you’re ready to call yourself a valkyrie,”
You saw the sternness in her eyes that reminded you again of Professor McGonagall and knew unequivocally that you were very, very fucked.

Odin was a dick. He was a shit parent and not a good king. Not really. He’d changed in the past few years. He was great at being a grandfather. That didn’t excuse him from his past crimes.
“I saved them,” he tried to protest while the court looked on, looked at the evidence of his crime in front of him. The valkyrie were still crumpled where they’d fallen, too weak from having spent centuries in raven form.
Loki’s nose wrinkled at Odin’s blatant lie. “It is unwise to lie in my presence father, or have you forgotten what my godhood is?” Loki asked coldly, sneering the word ‘father’. He loved Hugin and Munin since he was a child. They’d followed him along on adventures with Thor to protect the young princelings. Neither of them had known, at the time, of course, but they knew now that they’d been protected by Valkyrie.
You hated that Loki’s relationship with Odin was shattering again under all the secrets coming to light. They had just started to repair it. There was no helping it. Odin had to pay for what he did to the valkyrie. Not just to Hugin and Munin.
You would comfort Loki and be there for him later. Right now, justice had to be served. That was why you had a second chance at life. Hela wanted this wrong against her valkyrie righted. She was the patron goddess of the valkyrie.
Odin glared at his son. Before he could open his mouth again to spill more lies, you spoke, your wings flaring out behind you, making you look more menacing and reminding the entire court that you were a valkyrie now too. “You ordered the valkyrie to fight against Hela when you were banishing her,” you announced, reminding the court, reminding the realm what had happened. Most of them didn’t even seem to remember that Odin had a daughter.
It was no surprise that he would wipe their memories to hide what he’d done.
Magic surrounded you as you spoke, spread and reminded the people. It wasn’t your magic. It wasn’t Loki’s. Frigga had arrived, summoned by someone, but it wasn’t her magic either. You didn’t know whose it was at first. It wasn’t important at the moment, not really. The story was important and it flowed through you, not even truly feeling like your own words.
“You knew full well that Hela was their patron goddess and they would lose going up against her, but every valkyrie is bound to obey the throne of Asgard, so they couldn’t fight your orders. They were all massacred by Hela in the fight. Except for two. Odin ordered Hugin and Munin to stay behind. The only two valkyrie left on Asgard.
He’d sacrificed all of their sisters in order to banish their goddess. And there was nothing any of them could do about it.”
The court gasped at your words, at the truth they heard and remembered.
The magic around you crackled and you took Loki’s hand. It wasn’t either of your magic.
The crackling got worse and a portal opened in front of you with black and green magic. “Thank you, Sigyn,” Hela said as she stepped through with Fenrir striding in behind her.
“You’re banished,” Odin spluttered, unable to think of something better to say.
Hela rolled her eyes. “I come to seek justice, as is my right as the queen of Helheim. Don’t fret. I won’t be on your realm long. The realm has heard your crimes, father,” she sneered the word, just as Loki had done. “You have harmed the valkyrie under my care for too long and things must change. Now,”
“What do you want?” Odin actually sounded afraid of his daughter and you understood why. He was vicious as he taught her to be and in the height of her power, while Odin was at the end of his.
“You to pay for what you’ve done,” Hela replied easily. “And for the valkyrie to be allowed back on Asgard where they belong. Their numbers have swelled in Helheim and they are finally strong again,”
The crowd was, of course, focused on the first part of that statement. So were you and Loki. But it was Frigga who made the first move. “Darling?” She asked with tears in her eyes. Her baby was home. She shouldn’t have been there, shouldn’t have been home. She was banished, but Frigga didn’t care. She rushed to hug her baby, loving all her children equally.
Hela smiled and hugged her mama. “Hello, mother,” she said gently. “I missed you too. And I’m sorry for this, but father cannot be allowed to hurt the valkyrie anymore,” she said gently. No one could deny their love for mama Frigga. She still held Frigga in her arms as she turned her attention back to Odin. “As queen of Helheim, I sentence you for your crimes against the citizens of my realm,”
“Hela, no,” Frigga tried to protest.
“It’ll be alright, mother,” Hela soothed as Odin stood to protest. “I’m not going to hurt him. Yet. Enjoy your remaining years of life father. Cherish every single moment. For the second you get to my realm, you will pay. In the meantime…” she gestured and magic surrounded Odin before anyone could stop her. “You will surrender the throne to your heir and relinquish what powers remain to you. You do not deserve to be Allfather, but I will not strip mother of her husband, not until it is your day to come to Helheim,”
Odin gasped as his powers were ripped from him with Hela’s magic. The Odinforce, the magic that made Odin Allfather, flew to Loki and Gungnir appeared in Loki’s hand. Loki fell to his knees beside you as the magic filled him. You caught him and eased him down. “Loki!”
Hela smirked over at the pair of you. “I had hoped it would be you, little brother,” she said fondly. She kissed Frigga’s forehead. “It will be alright, mother,” she said. “And I will see you again someday, when the time comes,”
With that, Hela left you all, returning to Helheim through her portal as everyone stared in shock at what had just happened.

You and Loki were both on your knees, staring at the spot where Hela had been. The entire court was staring at the spot where Hela had been. You couldn’t blame them. You were all in shock. Hela had just thrown all of your lives into chaos. That was supposed to be Loki’s thing. Apparently, it ran in the family.
You needed time to process what had happened, but time was one thing you didn’t have, one thing you never seemed to have when you needed it. There was work to do. Emotions could come later. Emotions had to come later.
Loki understood that truth as well. He’d been training for this day for years. The time had finally come for him to officially take the throne. He got to his feet, shaky at first, but he steadied when his grip tightened on Gungnir. He knew his duty. He knew what needed to be done. He offered you a hand and helped you to your feet as he took in the scene around him, evaluating exactly what orders he needed to give to get the realm back in order.
He looked to Frigga first. “Mother, would you kindly escort Father to rest?” Loki would never order his mama around. That didn’t mean his request was any less a command. He needed Odin to not be in the throne room. Odin had been stripped of his powers and authority. Loki needed a clear path to take charge of the realm.
Frigga had a proud look in her eyes as she inclined her head. “Of course, darling,” she helped Odin to his feet and led him from the throne room. You assumed that she would take him to the healing wing first before settling him in their suite to rest. Being stripped of his powers likely had taken a toll on him. He still seemed dazed and uncomprehending. That was probably a good thing for the time being. He would cause fewer problems that way.
You saw the tension ease from Loki’s shoulders when Odin was safely out of the room. That was one problem down. Loki turned to you and drew your attention back to Hugin and Munin. They desperately needed help and healing. You both saw it. /I hate to ask, darling. You deserve to be here…/ he told you telepathically. He wanted your rule to be equal, unlike how Odin and Frigga were.
/This needs done. I understand. We can change the realm later/ you reassured him in return. You were there for each other, just as you always had been. You both knew what needed to be done now. Those valkyrie needed your help.
/Thank you, witchling/ Loki said fondly, relief flooded through the connection that you were understanding and willing to do what was necessary. He gave the official request for you and Thor to take care of Hugin and Munin. Again, he would never order you around, but that didn’t make the request any more an order.
You rushed to the valkyrie and checked them over. They would heal, but would definitely require a stay in the healing wing to recover. Thor picked up one of them and you got Hogun to pick the other one up and help you get them to the healing wing.
Loki officially took the throne while you were heading out. You looked up at him in all of his formal regal glory with pride in your eyes. He really was made to rule and would serve the realm well.

You didn’t know how you knew that Hugin and Munin were valkyrie. They were ravens. You’d only ever seen them as ravens. Now, though, something about them called to you and you felt that they were valkyrie. They were like you.
It wasn’t the time at the moment to find out what was going on with them. You couldn’t draw attention, not in front of Odin and not in front of your children. You had a feeling there was going to be fallout from this revelation and you wanted your children safely out of it.
This revelation also had to be given to the court now, before Odin could make up some excuse to get out of it. Hela had said you would have to help her. You realized that this was the first step. The valkyrie had died because Odin had forced them to fight Hela. Hela was their patron goddess. There was no way they could stand against her. The valkyrie had been destroyed. All but Hugin and Munin it seemed. You knew from your studies that the valkyrie had wings and had the secondary form of ravens. No one had made the connection, probably because of Odin’s meddling. Likely it was magic from Gungnir that made them forget what he’d done.
Until now.
/Narvi, Vali, go with Aunt Sif. Now/ you ordered the twins in a tone that demanded you be obeyed. Your children were mischievous and could be troublemakers, just like your husband. But, like Loki, they had learned when they could get away with not listening and when they had to obey. This time, they needed to obey without question, without complaint. You needed them out of here before you confronted Odin.
You wouldn’t see your children in danger for the decision you had to make. The twins immediately teleported to Sif’s arms. Sif was used to their teleporting by then and caught them easily, cuddling them close automatically. She looked between you and Loki, trying to decide who had told the twins to go to her. When she realized that Loki was as baffled as she was, she turned to look at you instead. She saw your expression and realized exactly why you’d sent the twins to her. She nodded to you, said something polite to excuse herself to Odin, and left with the twins. She would take them to safety and keep them there.
“What’s going on, here?” Odin demanded of you. You were acting strangely and the entire court knew it.
Hugin and Munin shifted on their perches, drawing your attention back to them. “The court is owed an explanation on a matter,” you said formally. It was within your rights as princess to make this request. You had to speak carefully to get the answers you needed without getting yourself killed.
Loki wouldn’t like it if you got yourself killed again so soon after coming back to life.
“What explanation?” Odin asked warily. Loki squeezed your hand, warning you to be careful. He knew this was important to you, whatever this was, or you never would speak out in front of the court. You tended to keep your head down, even being Loki’s wife. But being Loki’s wife was what had Odin wary, and what gave you the courage to speak up for what was right.
“An explanation for Hugin and Munin. They are my sister-Valkyrie,” you announced for the benefit of the entire court. There were shocked gasps from everyone in attendance. You felt the magic around them. Felt what Odin had done.
/Help,/ you made the request of Loki. He knew more magic than you did. You squeeze his hand and let him see the spells that you did. Without a word and without question, he lent you his power and the knowledge to break the spells.
You gestured to the ravens and snapped Odin’s spells. Destroyed the spells that had kept them trapped in raven form for all of these centuries.
They both turned back to their winged-human forms to the outrage of the court. They’d been in raven form for so long that they crumpled, unable to support themselves on legs that were no longer strong. Loki used magic to catch them and ease them to the ground, putting shields up around them. They would be safe while you figured out how to deal with Odin.
A valkyrie should not be treated as those two were. Odin was going to be called to task for what he had done. Something had to be done. Though he was king and Allfather. It was going to be difficult at best.
But something had to be done for how he had treated the valkyrie of the realm.

Thor managed to get you and Loki back onto the jet in one piece. You took your seat next to Loki and laid your head on his shoulder. You folded your wings against your back and snuggled close, dead exhausted with your magic so drained. Loki wrapped his strong arms around you and cuddled you close, holding you safe in his arms. When you were both safe with the other, he rested his head on yours and you were both asleep in moments.
You slept the whole way back to the tower, desperately needing it after that exertion and battle.
“Who’s going to wake them?” Stark asked when the jet landed. You were barely awake enough to hear them.
“Do you really want to get stabbed?” Bruce asked his science bro. Tony could be dumb for being such a genius.
“You know Loki will throw you off the roof of the building, Stark. He won’t find it as fun as defenestrating you, but he’ll take what he can get,” Nat replied dryly. Stark was always finding himself defenestrated when he annoyed Loki too much. Which happened far too frequently. It was safe, though, as Jarvis had protocols to send a suit to rescue Stark when he went flying out the defenestration window.
You groaned and opened your eyes “I’m awake,” you grumbled. There was no reason for Stark to get himself thrown off the tower for waking Loki when you could do it without nearly dying.
“Thank the Norns. I do not feel like getting stabbed today,” Thor replied as you sat up.
You shook Loki gently. “Wake up, love. We’re home,” you told him gently, letting your magic wash over him so he wouldn’t freak out when he woke. Loki didn’t do well with waking up in strange places. He’d been tortured by Thanos and time had yet to ease those emotional scars. It was amazing that he’d been able to fall asleep on the jet. It just spoke to how comfortable he was now with the found family of the Avengers. When you first met him, he’d never have been able to fall asleep in front of them.
Well, in front of anyone but you. You’d always had a safe effect on the god. Your magic was Asgardian and had drawn Loki to you in the first place when you’d first met. You’d only grown closer together and that was before you found out that you’re betrothed to him before you’d been born. You’d never known as your mom had escaped from a bandit attack when she was pregnant and ended up running through one of the secret portals to Midgard. She’d died and you’d grown up in foster care, not knowing that you were Asgardian until you’d met Loki.
Loki opened his emerald eyes and gave you a warm, loving smile, just as he always did. “We’re home?” He asked, still groggy.
“Yes, back at the tower,” you clarified. It did well to be specific with Loki, especially when he was this groggy and might think that you were back on Asgard. “The twins will be happy to see us,” you added, hoping that might wake him faster.
Loki, indeed, woke much faster at that. He had to be awake to deal with the twins. They were too smart for their own good, magical, and had gotten far too much mischief from Loki. They were also adorable and you loved them both dearly. “I’m up,” he said quickly and sat up properly.
You laughed at his reaction. “You have to be awake to manage those two,” you agreed and kissed Loki softly. Which had Stark making retching noises in the background.
“Stark, I have no problem throwing you off the roof of the tower,” Loki informed Tony dryly as he stood and offered you a hand to help you to your feet. You didn’t need the help after the nap, but you appreciated Loki’s manners and care all the same. Loki gave you a curious look and a familiar smirk. “I know there is an English word for throwing someone out of a window. It is a great word. Is there such a word for throwing someone off of a roof?”
You shook your head. “Regrettably, no. Though Peter would argue that ‘yeet’ works in that situation.” Loki spoke perfect English thanks to the Allspeak. He was just teasing Stark with the questions.
“How about we don’t yeet me off the roof? I want to check on Pep,” Tony replied and sauntered off the jet to go check on Pepper. You and Loki followed right behind him. Wherever Pepper was, your children would be.
You found the three of them in the common room. Pepper was reading a story to the twins, one on either side of her, entranced by the tale. Your children both loved stories, a trait they’d inherited from their father, the god of stories.
They all looked over to you when you stepped off the elevator. “Mama! Papa!” The twins called and both teleported. You braced yourself to catch whichever twin teleported into your arms. Loki did the same next to you and you knew the same thought was crossing both of your minds: you had to get around to teaching the twins that they couldn’t just teleport all over the place.
You expected that it would be Narvi who ended up in your arms. You weren’t surprised by that. What did surprise you was that both twins teleported to you. They managed to teleport so that they were half in your arms, half in Loki’s and it took some juggling not to drop them. You cuddled them both close and moved closer to Loki so he could wrap his arms around you too. “It’s alright, sweetlings. We’re back now and safe,” you soothed the twins, feeling their nerves and anxieties.
“Everything is alright,” Loki agreed and kissed both of their heads.
The twins soon relaxed and told you all about the story that Pepper was reading to them. Narvi insisted that Pepper’s baby liked the story too, though there was no logical way for him to know that. You didn’t doubt your magical child. You also had no idea what his obsession was with Pepper’s unborn baby. It didn’t seem harmful, but it was yet another thing for you to keep an eye on.
There were so many things when it came to magical mischievous children.

You had an amazing trip back to Midgard, catching up with your friends and found family. You also promised to return and spend more time when it was closer to when Pepper was due so you could help her with the delivery. She would have a team of the best doctors on Earth, of course, but she and Tony both felt better knowing the magical healer would be on realm and helping. You also gave them a way to contact you in an emergency if she went into labor sooner than expected. You’d keep your word to her.
The twins were sad to leave and Narvi took it especially hard. He didn’t want to leave Pepper and actually cried about it. Narvi never cried. The twins were both capable of telepathically telling you and Loki what was wrong, so they didn’t need to wail like normal babies to get their way. He was really attached to Pepper and her baby even before the baby was born.
You weren’t sure what that meant, but was pretty sure that it wasn’t a good sign.
With Loki being crown prince now, though, you were going to have to split your time between Asgard and Midgard more than you used to have to. Loki was going to be king and needed to learn as much as he could before Odin officially stepped down. He would also be taking the throne sooner than you’d originally anticipated since Odin had been planning on stepping down once you had given birth and things had settled a little afterward.
No one was expecting you to die in childbirth. That had kinda thrown a wrench in everyone’s plans. Especially yours.
*
You hugged the team goodbye when you were gathered around the Bifrost circle to head home. You held Narvi secure in yours arms so he didn’t get up to any mischief. “You can come visit when you have a school break,” Loki was promising Wanda as you said goodbye. You knew that Wanda was practically Loki’s little sister as well as his magic student. She missed him dearly while he’d been gone and now you were leaving again and hadn’t been home nearly long enough. You understood. Midgard was your home too. You’d grown up there. But now you were going to have to spend more time on Asgard.
You shook off the thoughts and reminders of the team’s mortality. You knew you just had to do what the other Asgardians did and enjoy every moment of time that you had with the team, store up as many happy memories with them as they could while you had them in your lives.
You hugged everyone goodbye, promised to visit soon, and finally gathered with the others in the Bifrost circle to head back to Asgard. Thor raised Mjolnir and you cuddled Narvi close to protect him as the rainbow lights surrounded you and brought you home.
Heimdall welcomed you home and told you the skiff was waiting for you. So you all climbed in and Loki flew it back to the palace while you cuddled the twins. Vali lit up in excitement and you had to hold her by the back of the shirt to keep her from leaning over the edge too far. She had no fear of anything and dove into the world headfirst. The twins were as different as night and day, but you loved them both the same and loved them both dearly.
When you finally got to the palace, you made your way to the throne room, since you all had to announce to Odin that you had returned. It was a formality, of course, he knew the second you called for Heimdall that you were coming home. Still, everyone officially coming to the realm had to present themself to Odin. Even his children and grandchildren.
You and Loki had to lead the procession into the throne room now. Thor was older, but Loki was the crown prince now, so he was expected to lead. Now that he wasn’t driving the skiff, he was back to carrying Vali. You both stopped before the throne and Thor and Sif stepped up beside you. You all four went down on one knee to express your fealty to the throne. “Father, we have returned home,” Loki announced.
“Welcome home, my children, grandchildren,” Odin replied. With his words, you were allowed to stand again. Unfortunately, in that movement, Loki’s grip on Vali slipped just enough that she could squirm out of his arms and run up to see her grandfather. Odin laughed, swept her up and settled her on his lap like this happened all the time. He was so very different with his grandchildren than he was with his children.
You felt something strange in the throne room and looked around subtly trying to find out what it was. Your eyes finally lit on Odin’s ravens. He’d had them for forever. They were too smart for their own good, but… that shouldn’t spark your notice of them now.
So what was it about them that was drawing your attention?
You finally realized when your own jet black wings shifted and settled and a feather fluttered to the ground. The birds were watching you, the first Valkyrie they’d seen on Asgard in centuries.
The first other valkyrie they’d seen in centuries.
Like called to like. The ravens called to you because they were like you.

You watched Thor and Loki until they were out of sight, heading for the battle. You were stuck at the jet with Banner. He was only called in for emergencies and you were assigned to backup and healing only. You understood Cap’s reasoning. That didn’t make you like it any better.
You paced the jet, hating sitting still when your love, your family, was in danger and fighting a battle that you were being kept on. “Jarvis, show us the battle, would you?” Bruce asked and one of the walls turned into a Jarvis screen to show the battle from wherever Jarvis had cameras setup. You watched for a moment before you returned to your anxious pacing. “Kid, I know it’s worrying, but there’s nothing we can do until the team calls for us,” Bruce reminded you gently.
You should have been offended at being called ‘kid’ still, but the team had watched you grow up from when you were 15 and they started coming to you for healings after they found out about your abilities. Some habits would be hard to die. Especially when Stark continued to call you ‘kid’ and would continue until he came up with a better nickname.
“I know, Doctor Banner, but… I just feel so useless here. I could be out there, fighting, helping, healing Clint’s latest bullet wound. Something,” you grumbled, keeping with your old term of address. You’d been overly polite to the team when you’d first moved in and you’d never been exceptionally close to Bruce, so you remained polite. You were a Lady of Asgard. You were a Valkyrie. You were a trained witch and warrior. You shouldn’t be left behind like a child.
Even if you had just died.
Even if you had just had a child.
You knew you were being unreasonable. You knew that you needed to stay behind, to wait until you were called. It was dangerous to go running into battle when you didn’t know anything about your new abilities, or your wings.
That didn’t make waiting any easier.
You fought to stop pacing and watched the battle with Bruce. You wrung your hands as you watched. The team knew how to fight. Even Clint, despite how often he was injured on missions. That didn’t make you worry any less.
You analyzed the battle as you watched. Something was nagging at you. Something seemed wrong about what you were watching. The team seemed to have the upper hand, especially with Loki and Thor there. The pair fought together seamlessly. They were so used to fighting together, trained together their entire lives and had fought side by side in numerous battles throughout the centuries.
So if they were fighting so well, what was nagging at you?
You scanned the battle footage again, searching for whatever it was that was bothering you. You finally saw it. Something moved in the trees, just outside of the battle. You cursed under your breath. “Code Green, Doctor Banner. We’re needed,” you said when you saw the shadows move again, just out of view.
“What is it?” Bruce asked as he looked more closely at the screen.
“Reinforcements for the bad guys,” You replied and drew your weapons.
Bruce nodded. “Go, I’ll catch up,”
You didn’t need any more prompting than that. You glanced at the screen again, gathering the team’s whereabouts before you teleported to Loki’s side. You didn’t know why you were drawn to Loki. Loki could defend himself. You should’ve gone to Clint, but no, you had to get to Loki’s side.
And you realized you’d arrived just in time.
“Witchling?” Loki asked when you appeared, shifting so you could protect each other, fight back to back.
Or at least he tried.
He would’ve succeeded better if you hadn’t shoved him out of the way as a figure burst out of the trees. You threw a bolt of magic at the creature. Loki cursed and turned, joining you in the combat. “There’s more of them!” You called. The things were fast and vicious and you and Loki both had trouble pinning it down. You threw magic, blades, whatever you could at them, but nothing seemed to hit them. You couldn’t even get a good look at them except that they were black and fast and blurred as they moved.
You kept your wings tucked to your back as you fought. You didn’t know how to use them effectively, yet.
Loki grabbed your hand. “Together, witchling,” he said as your whole team was surrounded by the creatures.
You both drew your magic to the surface. Thor was drawing his lightning. “Together,” you agreed. You and Loki both threw a blast of magic out at the same time, decimating the enemy while leaving the team standing.
It took a lot of power to do, but there was no other way against those creatures. Thor grabbed you both to keep you on your feet.
“Why don’t you two ever start with that move?” Stark complained good naturedly when the battle was properly over.
You couldn’t help laughing, giddy at the magic drain and leaning on Thor to stay on your feet. Loki growled “Clearly, it’s not an easy spell,” he panted, hating having to have Thor hold him on his feet. He didn’t like the team seeing him weak.
“Please tell me Clint didn’t get shot,” you said sleepily, loopily as you laid your head on Thor’s arm.
“He can wait,” Nat replied kindly from your other side. You didn’t remember her moving. That wasn’t a good sign. “Let’s get you sitting down before Thor has to carry you and Loki stabs him for it,”
Thor chuckled. “I highly doubt Loki can even summon a dagger in this state,” he said fondly. Loki grumbled something very rude in Asgardian about a very uncomfortable place on Thor’s person where he would be summoning a dagger. Thor just chuckled. “Let’s get you two back to the jet,” he said kindly and kept his arms around you to keep you on your feet as you stumbled back to the jet with the team.

You joined the team on the jet with Loki and found empty seats to take. You took yours carefully, noting your wings with each movement. You didn’t really know how to control them yet, and just kept them tucked against your back. You were going to have to find out how to use them soon.
Hela said the valkyrie would be returning to Asgard. Maybe one of them could help you learn about your wings as well as any other new abilities that you’d gained. Hopefully, they would be arriving soon. You didn’t want your wings to be a liability. You didn’t want to be a liability. Despite that your main function was as a healer, you were still a lady of Asgard. You needed to be able to fight, to protect yourself, your children, your family.
Not only were you a lady of Asgard, but you were also now a Valkyrie of Asgard.
It was a lot to take in.
And there was still so much to learn.
Right now, though, you had to focus on the mission at hand.
Loki took the seat beside you and made sure you were buckled in. After all this time, he was still afraid of flying. Thor knew that and took the seat on Loki’s other side. Loki was always calmer flying when he had someone next to him who could fly without the need of an airplane. If the plane went down, he could grab onto Thor and survive since Thor could fly.
Soon, you would be able to fly as well. Which would make you both feel a lot better. You frowned as you noticed something, realized something. You were being drawn to Loki. That wasn’t so unusual. He was your husband. Of course you were drawn to him.
But something was different now. You felt drawn to protect him. That was new. You always fought together, but you’d never felt the need to protect him. Loki could protect himself. He could take care of himself. He was a skilled warrior, far more skilled than you were. He had centuries of physical and magical training.
So why did you feel the need to protect him?
That was a thought for a later time. You realized you’d been zoning out on Cap’s pre-battle speech and explanation. You’d forgotten how boring his lectures and exposition could be. Nine months away had changed so much. You tuned into his battle orders as he was giving out assignments to everyone.
You scowled when you realized that Cap had assigned you to stay out of the main fray and focus on healing. It was to be expected, but it still irked you. This was the kind of assignment you’d gotten when you’d first officially joined the team. He was treating you like a kid again, which was something you thought he’d grown out of, with all the powers and skills you’d gained. Not to mention the years. “Cap, I’m plenty capable-“ you started to protest.
Cap shook his head. “Not this time. You just came back from the dead and you just gave birth a couple of months ago. You need to ease back into field work. Which means staying safe and focusing on healing,” he told you firmly, though there was care and love in his voice. He’d always treated you like a daughter and that hadn’t changed one bit.
You sighed and rolled your eyes, but you couldn’t disagree with his logic. “Alright, Cap. Unless some emergency comes up,” you finally agreed. You could stay in the reserves and focus on healing.
The jet finally landed at the battle site. You hated it, but you stayed behind with Bruce, waiting for word that you were needed. You kissed Loki before he headed out to the battle. “Be careful,” you told him, more nervous than you wanted to admit. You should be protecting him, not hiding by the jet with Bruce.
Loki returned the kiss and stroked your cheek. “Always, witchling,” he promised you. He gave you his usual Cheshire Cat grin before he and Thor headed off to the battle. You watched the pair go, watched their light steps and graceful strides.
They clearly thought this was great fun.
Neither of them had seen a proper battle in awhile.
