Why Miroya-kun is actually a pretty cute nickname for “look boy” in Japanese why it’s less meaningful in the English version

And the significance of “look” and the Todoroki family

「見ろや」くん “Miroya”-kun’s name as you know comes from his line during endeavor’s fight in Kyushu to “look at who’s fighting for us”. 見ろ ‘Miro’ is the commanding form of the verb 見る ‘miru’ - to look/see/watch/observe. や ‘ya’ is a common suffix for the dialects in the more southern prefectures of Japan starting in the Kansai region, Fukuoka being one of them. くん ‘-kun’ is just a suffix used for young boys.

The main part that is impossible for the English translation to convey is probably that “Miroya”-kun (although not a realistic name), is phonetically name-like due to the suffix “-ya”. That is used as the ending for a lot of boy names (Touya, Izaya, Shouya, Kazuya, etc). So in japanese it’s actually a cute nickname for that boy.

But that’s not all that gets lost in translation. As mentioned above, the ‘Miro’ part can translate to see, watch, observe, etc. essentially any action done with your eyesight. The English translation equivalent therefore will depend on the context. But in the original Japanese bnha, the verb 見る ‘miru’ is used a lot. Especially regarding the Todoroki family. Which is why Miroya-kun’s nickname is important for it to be that.

Some examples of the use of 見る in the Todofam are:

親父が見てるんだから “since my old man’s watching” -Shoto during the sports festival

見ていてくれ “keep watching me” -Endeavor when he became no1

見てるぞ、親父 “I’m watching you, dad” -Shoto while watching the fight at Kyushu

言われなくてもずっと見ていた “I’ve been watching you even without being told” -Touya during Dabi Dance

燈矢を見ていてやらないと “I have to keep my eye on Touya from now on” -End during final war

So its what a lot of people were thinking the chapters gonna be, just more build up and showing shoto and activating phosphor on his way before he arrives and next chapter he'll probably stop the explosion dabi will pass out after realizing shoto came too and we'll be told he's being taken into custody as we change battlefields again, hopefully to ochako to keep the ball rolling.

That being said not too much in this chapter, just dabi seeing his family watching him. He's still exploding in his heat dome attack but slowly now. More shots of the evacuation.

The news reporter is back remembering endeavors speech, showing people's faith in him and the other heroes. Look boy rooting for endeavor as he starts to pray. It is nice that it is the world watching and praying in this situation for endeavor too.

The younger kids putting their faith in todoroki the way look boy put his in endeavor is heartwarming, they root for him as he and Iida shift into maximum overdrive across the heavens.

I'll take any crumbs from class b, just happy we're still seeing them at this point.

I wonder what the dabi cracked means, is it his mind breaking, is his body breaking, is he breaking out of the dabi persona trying to go back to touya, does it mean nothing? Who knows.

God of War Time

I haven’t started God of War yet...but it is being played in my house. And my partner in crime magically turns into a bro when she plays...I’m not mad about it haha. It is just funny to hear “Oh Yeeeeeeeeah!” “DOOOOOPE” and whatever else like “FUCK DAMMMMMIT” come flying from the other room. The chorus of dope dope dope, was something unexpected. I will say the game is gorgeous though. I can’t wait to make some time to play it. And OMG I wish I could say “boy” with such bass-y guttural tones.
