Tips on meal swipes/dining dollars.
As some of you may know, I’ll be starting my second year of university this upcoming Tuesday, technically classes start on Monday, but I only have classes on Tuesday and Thursday, so woohoo for me.
Anyways, a valuable lesson I learned last year was to keep track of your meal swipes and dining dollars.
Since, I ran out of both every semesters once the last two months of school rolled around. You see, meal swipes felt endless, I had 105 swipes and $350 dining dollars, which may sound like a lot, I mean some people had the same plan as me and they even had a few to spare at the end of the year, not me. I just bought food whenever and bought whatever I felt like, sure it’s okay to splurge a little here and a little over there, but to do it everyday, big problem.
Also, don’t forget to ask how much your meal swipe covers.
What I mean by this, a meal swipe has a limit whether it’s $8 or who knows how much, ask your SSA, student service adviser, in simple terms your counselor. Honestly, any question you have, ask your SSA, that is what they are paid for, and if you don’t like your SSA, well ask for a new one or something. Anywho, you should know how much your meal swipe covers so you can use that money up to the last penny! You see, last year my meal swipe covered up to $10 in the restaurants we have here in the school, but I didn’t know that, I thought that if you bought a meal, well there goes your meal swipe, you know? So I would buy a meal and it would be between $6 something to about $8, do you see the problem there? I would waste about $4 almost every meal swipe! Money just down the drain. Had I known first semester that the meal swipe covered up to $10 dollars, I would have gotten an extra entree or maybe something else to eat later, I wouldn’t have to eat the extra item at that moment, just have it there for dinner or whenever I felt like eating it.
Now second semester, we have restaurants at the school but we also the the Student Union, which is the cafeteria and depending of the time of the day you went, the prices varied.
Breakfast: $8
Lunch: $9
Dinner: $10
So if I went for either breakfast or lunch, which was rare, I usually only went for breakfast, I would use my dining dollars, since I would loose $2 or $1 depending if I went during breakfast or lunch, but if I went for dinner, I would use a meal swipe. Also, I know some universities don’t allow their students to take their backpacks into the cafeteria, but my school does, so I would take Tupperware and take some extra stuff for later as well!
