Number 10: Lords of Vegas, designed by James Ernest and Mike Selinker and published by @mayfairgames. Starting the top 10 of my top 25 games I’ve discovered this year is this dice placement game of building casinos and taking on the competition in sin city! 💵🎲🤑 Lords of Vegas really took me by surprise and I fell in love with it almost from the first roll. The idea is a fairly simple one, you are casino owners expanding your business across the city and starting partnerships with other casino owners, all whilst trying to reshuffle casino management in your favour and bring in the most cash. One of my favourite actions is the ability to go to someone else’s casino and bet an amount of cash on a simple dice roll, hoping to get anything other than a 7-9. If you win, the owner pays out of their pocket, but if you lose, you pay them. It’s so simple but creates such a buzz around the table as you throw your last million down hoping to make your opponent pay out. There’s also reshuffling of management, which involves picking up all the dice in a casino (each die representing a player’s power over that establishment) and rolling them all, hoping to change management to yourself or at least someone different (management takes the money so ownership is important!). Every action is basically luck based, but the choices are very strategic, so every choice comes with a gamble! #theme 🎲🤑💵 Aside from the awesome gameplay, Lords of Vegas also looks amazing on the table once the board starts getting built up. Each player has a set of dice of one colour, and as they start spreading out across the board it becomes a colourful collage of dice and tiles. Also this is a game where paper money feels perfect for the theme! 💵🎲🤑 Lords of Vegas is a surprising entry for me, as it’s not a game I’d ever taken notice of until it was put in front of me, but wow, it’s fun! Definitely worth taking a gamble on this one!
