“I shouldn’t be in love with you...”

Rose’s heart sped up as she made eye contact with the Doctor. “Why not?” She asked quietly. “Why would it be so bad?”

Oh, if they just hadn’t decided to visit that day.

It had all happened so fast, the ghosts, finding out what they were, the daleks, the battle...the plan to send her away in order to keep her ‘safe’. It was all happening because they’d landed on that damned, stupid day.

Clinging to that magnet had been difficult enough. Wrapping her arms around something that was threatening to pull her shoulder out of the socket was no joy but when that dalek had knocked the lever out of place, she felt as if her whole world was coming to an end.

And it was.

Rose Tyler was never the kind to just sit back and let things happen. She had let go of the magnet in order to push the lever back into place and after that, it was all about holding on. She could hear the Doctor’s voice, even over the hurricane-like winds of the Void trying to pull her in.

The former shopgirl had made it a point before they began to make sure the TARDIS key on her chain was wrapped around her wrist instead of her neck, not wanting to lose it to the void. She didn’t know it would save her life.

She’d been able to tell when she was slipping but in the last instant, just as her fingers slipped, she hooked the chain around the switch and that chain (bless it) managed to give her another few moments before it too snapped.

The Doctor was screaming then, outright screaming her name as she fell towards what he’d called hell. Her final thought, despite everything, was that she wouldn’t be able to keep her promise of forever.

As her back hit the wall with such force, the wind was knocked out of Rose and even the back of her head suffered a smaller impact. She fell forward then with a thud and didn’t have it in her straight away to get up.
