Assorted FFXIV Headcanons
in no particular order that enhance canon but do not trash it? But I am shy and there a few here so... underneath the cut. Updates maybe. This post will come back round if that happens. about calendars, demonyms, male sunseeker miqo’te names, Doma and Hyur
They also feature in my slowly slowly percolating long-long-fic:
- Alternate: Demonyms - Ilsabarden (Ill-sah-bard-den) | Hingashin (Hin-gah-shin), Thavnairi (Thav-nar-ree) - b/c the canon ones kinda hurt my ears
The moons of the Eorzean Calender: Fury’s Moon, Lover’s Moon, Scholar’s Moon, Spinner’s Moon, Navigator’s Moon, Wanderer’s Moon, Builder’s Moon, Destroyer’s Moon, Warden’s Moon, Traders’ Moon, Matron’s Moon, Surveyor’s Moon (Because the canon system drives me nuts)
Calendar Markings - Sixth Astral Era aka After Endless Waters (AEW) | The Seventh Era is ‘ADF - After Dalamud Fall. So Year 1 ADF, Year 6 ADF etc. (because going ‘Year 5 7UE, Year 7AE annoys me)
- The days: Glaceturn, Hydrosturn, Aerosturn, Levinturn, Pyrosturn, Petrosturn, Luceturn, Skiaturn (Ice, Water, Wind, Levin, Fire, Earth, Astral, Umbral)
- Ehtanight = eight days | Sestenight = sixteen nights (because Eorzea has 8 days not 7 in a week)
- Doma is comprised of at least two provinces if not more - the Fanged Crescent and Yanxia (because the concept of JUST Yanxia being Doma to me is weird. It seems that its called that after the Castle acknowledging Doma Castle’s sovereignty over Yanxia... but it’s still weird to me. Though maybe the canon is growing on me) (I was going to include Nagxia but now that I know a little more about it and it seems to be loosely based on Vietnam I feel weird. It can be its own thing.)
- The proper name of Porta Praetoria is Loch Tor (means ‘Lake Gate’). the name of the fortress the Imperials built on top of is called Fort Hearthwatch.
- Because male Sunseeker Miqo'te adventurers are functioning outside of their pride and society, it has become popular amongst them to adopt the elongated pronunciation of their tribe name as a surname especially to avoid designations like 'Lieutenant Tia' which is wholly incorrect.
For example: G'raha Tia might become G'raha Goo or Raha Goo. X'ruhn Tia -(pronounced as Sheh-Roon) - would be Ruhn Sheh. And R'hylas (Rah-lyis) would be Hylas Ruh. Or adopt an epithet such as ‘Hylas Raptoreye’
- Some Moonkeeper Males also add additional names when dealing with outsiders. Ujah’li Moshantu for example (Ujah - the mother, ‘li’ her third son) would be Tahkhma Ujah’li Moshantu
- Eastern ‘Midlander’ Hyur, at least from Yanxia call themselves Kuravet or ‘Rivermist’ Hyur due to their long history of living near the One River. There’s also ‘Eastern Highlanders’ who lived in the Fanged Crescent/Tail Mountains, the Shura aka the Stonefang Hyur and Thavnairi Hyur are of the Sandwhisper sect.
