Also, I really like the angel motif you have for Eden and how that fits with her name. She’s literally named after paradise! Would you think of her more as a fallen angel or one that still has favor?

Uwaaah~! Thank you! Leslie is pretty pastel I'll be honest, when I was making his palette on his reference sheet I had to blink at it a few times bc I was like "this bitch is barbie color..."

I think sometimes I end up making lighter palettes than I intend to because I use a darker canvas, since it's easier on the eyes and I'm prone to migraines. 😵‍💫

This is a good question though! It really made me think! I think Eden would definitely view herself as fallen in this analogy, but that may more so be because of her rejection of and subsequent cutting off of her oppressive parents. For me, as her creator, it's a bit more symbolic/abstract.

Since biblically "Eden" was a paradise without flaw or sin, I thought the name would suit the expectations that were had for her. Eden's angelic imagery — similarly — has a lot to do with pressures of measuring up to perfection, to the point where she was never allowed to just simply be. Angels were considered servants to god, beings without the free will humans possessed (and by extension the free will to choose to sin) and that was what set them apart. But those kinds of restrictions and the weight of such expectations will crush a person, so it's only natural one would choose freedom, even if its seen as "sinful" to do... wouldn't they?

So yeah, I guess fallen is a good way to look at it!

What was Leslie childhood like?

Leslie is canonically from new york, so some people might assume he grew up somewhere super progressive and welcoming to his obvious queerness. But like a lot of folks can tell you, it's usually the major cities that are more accepting and diverse, and that doesn't always carry over to other areas. He's had his fair share of slurs hurled at him and scornful glares pointed his way at the very least. Really, plenty of people picked fights with him or had him in their crosshairs because of how he looks, acts, and is. He's never let it stop him, even to the point of ending up in harm's way. Put simply, he's just not the type to sit down and take it on the cheek, even when it might be smarter in the moment to do so. Probably because he was already used to it from home.

Leslie's dad was a hardass, "man's man" type. And Leslie, having inherited his father's temper but not his dependence on traditional ideas of masculinity, was butting heads with him for as long as he can remember. His father seemed to hold on to the idea that he could teach his son to "man up", and his stubbornness in these efforts was matched only by Leslie's stubbornness to defy them. He honestly took pride in it, even if out of pure spite. He's been kicked out after a screaming match as many times as he's stormed out of his own accord. Really, how headstrong Leslie is may be just about the only thing that kept him from a spiraling sense of self-loathing. While Leslie's mom didn't directly participate in trying to teach him to "be a man", she also didn't say or do anything to stop his dad, either. He'd tell you what she told him: that she preferred to "keep the peace." Funny how "the peace" seemed to exclusively refer to her own, and that her peace was apparently worth more than his. Despite her passivity coming at his expense, his grudge towards her is minimal, to be honest. Then again, it can be hard for children to bring themselves to hate their parents, even if they earn it.

The Leslie you see today is a product of that environment, really. Feisty, self-assured, protective, anti-authority, and perhaps overindulging in his interests now that he's not being shamed or belittled for them in his own home. He is nothing if not an avid believer of "treat yourself" culture. While someone like Eden sort of perpetuates the expectations of perfection put on her by others and suffers for it, Leslie suffers due to a sort of overcorrecting once he was on his own. He's lazy and a bit of a slob because he's used to being barked at like a drill sergeant, and he overindulges in hobbies and the like because he feels like he owes it to his younger self to enjoy these things now that he can.
