A Swahili word I learned in Tanzania that I wish we had in English is "pole" (pronounced po-lay). It means “sorry for your misfortune." It's a quick casual thing to say to someone who's hurting or having a bad day or w/e. It's nice to have a distinction between saying "sorry" for something I did to you personally and "sorry" for something that happened that isn't my fault. And isn't as formal as "my sympathies". (ex: when I got a cast strangers would say to me "pole, dada!" = "sorry, sister!")
OH this is a wonderful word! I so wish we had something like this in english because it’s such a different emotion compared to apologizing for something you’ve done wrong. Thank you for sharing!!
Dang you're a fast reader! It takes me like two months to get through each book, haha
There's nothing wrong with that! Admittedly, I have been functionally unemployed for about two months, so there's that; I also have been moving a bit quicker than I usually would because there's SO MUCH going on that I'm afraid if I take it any slower, I'll forget everything that's happened and who half these people even are, haha
lortarr replied to your post “Why aren’t you fucking idiots wearing helms?”
haha. I remember thinking that in some scenes too, and also being bothered that the wildlings + Night's Watch never have their hoods up despite the frigid temps. It's probz just so we can see who is who easier
I'm sure it is...but what's the point of the Hound having such a distinctive helm if he NEVER WEARS IT? Baffling :/
lortarr replied to your post:It’s so weird that Tywin has a different accent...
Robb’s accent gets a lot heavier in season three for no reason, it’s kinda just funny to me though
That makes me smile. It seems like they're trying to do something with the accents, but I'm not familiar enough with the variety to be able to tell what.... Except then there's the huge difference between Tywin and his kids, so maybe they just put something like 'put on a cool accent!' in the casting call and never unified it. It's distracting my linguist brain, haha
Answer the questions of the person who tagged you and write 11 new ones
Tag 11 people and link them
Let them know they are tagged
Questions I got:
1. Biggest goal for 2014?
Get into graduate school.
2. If you wrote an autobiography right now, what would be the funnest chapter to write?
Probably the chapter about undergrad. I was happy for the first time in a long time.
3. Which three famous people (living or dead) do you wish could advise you through life decisions?
Beyoncé; Alison Kilkenny (shhh she's kinda famous); La Maupin
4. Most influential class you’ve taken? (Have you thanked that professor?)
Probably the food class I took in my sophomore year of undergrad. It talked a lot about factory farming etc., and that's the reason I went vegetarian, and then vegan. I have not thanked the professor, because it was influential in my life in spite of him, not because of him, and he thought it was okay to treat me like an idiot because I was an English major and it was technically a science class.
5. Advice for the broken hearted?
It's gonna hurt until it doesn't. It's okay to indulge yourself. You have to take care of you, and if that means crying into a bowl of cookie dough once in awhile, so be it.
6. Do you prefer the city or the country? Forests or fields? Water or mountains?
Country; forests; water. Preferably all at the same time.
7. What is your current go-to Pandora station? (or current favorite album, if you’re not an internet radio user)
I don't use Pandora as much as I use Spotify; right now, I have a playlist I made for NaNoWriMo that has (among other things) Regina Spektor, Gavin Mikhail, Phillip Phillips, Dragonforce, Tom Waits, and Volbeat on it.
8. Which TV series have you felt the strongest emotional investment in?
Supernatural. It's the only show that I watched every episode, tried to quit watching, got dragged back to, and keep watching even though it keeps hurting me.
9. Favorite winter pastime?
Walking in the woods.
10. What would your 10 year old self think of who you’ve become so far?
I don't think she'd be impressed. I don't read as much as I used to, and when you're ten, all adults look like grownups, and I am not really a grownup. I think it would look like failure.
11. How do you motivate yourself to work/study/create?
I let it pile up until I cry myself to sleep and then I can usually make myself do it. I'm a terrible, terrible procrastinator. There's a lot of self-sabotage involved.
Again, I'm not going to tag anyone new, but if anyone feels like it, have some questions:
1. What's your favorite Pokémon?
2. Which Hogwarts house would you be in?
3. Do you plan meticulously or go with the flow?
4. What's your favorite season?
5. Are you introverted or extroverted?
6. What's your favorite day of the week?
7. Talk about the best boss/coworker you ever had.
8. What do you wish happened more often in books/movies/tv shows etc.?
9. What do you do just because you want to?
10. How do you feel about other people in your space? Do you get antsy when you have houseguests?
11. Is there something important to you that maybe isn't that common? (For example, do you love birdwatching or 16th century German manuscripts or Australian animals etc.?)

Nice! Where at / what for? Lemme know if you want tips on studying for the GRE, I just took it a week ago
I'm looking at various programs in linguistics at UOregon, UMass Amherst, SUNY Stony Brook, Purdue, Queen Mary's University of London, and University College of London.
Any advice about studying for the GRE would be much appreciated! :) Was it as awful as everyone says?
