@asklostcelestia I had a thought
Hidden
Finally, after spending She-knew-not how much time in that accursed tower, barely escaping from the group of assassins sent after her, and running until her hooves ached, Celestia and Sky could rest.
By the might and dutiful work of Sky Warden, she had survived, and she owed her life to him, though he said she owed him not. Now they had run a great distance, and Sky said they were near a shelter.
Stepping into the cave, hidden behind the crown of a tree, Celestia could not believe her eyes, for though the cave was pitch-black, beautiful gems shone from many stalactites, hanging from the roof.
Immediately upon entering, Celestia sat down, and nearly collapsed from exhaustion, had it not been for Sky, who caught her, as she fell. Though she said nothing, she smiled, and nodded to thank him.
With a stoic demeanour, characteristic of a trained soldier, Sky nodded back, though he smiled not, as he helped her down. After quietly asking her to be cautious, he turned around to guard the cave.
While Sky sat at the mouth of the cave, looking through the leaves before him, Celestia looked over his armour, yet she recognised it not. She did not understand; which war was it, that he mentioned?
In the silence, Celestia could hear much. Every time Sky shifted his body, even the tiniest bit, he inhaled sharply, and she knew why when she saw many feathers, stained a dark red, beneath his wing.
Without turning around, somehow, Sky knew Celestia was looking at him, but he only sighed, and told her to get some rest. He would stand guard at the entrance, and they would head out in the morning.
Many thoughts and questions arose within her mind. Though she was wary of him, as he had selflessly saved her numerous times, getting injured in the process, she knew she could trust him. She had to.
Still, as she laid down, she made sure to keep an eye on him, although she knew not whether she did so out of caution for herself, or care for him. A smile grew on her face as she slowly fell asleep.
Neither yet knew what the other thought of them…
I got another commission from @asklostcelestia!
This was such a fun project to work on! Flat colors and references below the cut :)
Guard
It did not take long before the Princess fell asleep, after which Sky sighed deeply, and laid down, guarding the cave entrance. It had been a busy day, and Sky feared the coming days would be busier.
Though exhaustion had yet to catch up to him, still, while he stood guard, he made sure to rest. As he laid there, alone with his thoughts, his mind started to drift to Celestia, sleeping behind him.
Turning around to the exhausted Princess, he smiled for a brief moment, before he put his facade up again. He knew, whether by duty or another reason, he was bound to her, and he would stay with her.
At that moment, he flinched, and lifted his wing to check a great wound, hidden beneath a couple of feathers. He had to be cautious, so he grabbed a small medic bag from his pouch to clean the wound.
But even though Sky had been trained to fight through the pain, now, since he had no need to fight, he felt every tiny move. Eventually, he gave up, and laid down again, frustrated and in great pain.
Then, Sky heard light hoofsteps, slowly approaching him from behind, and he sighed again, before he tried to turn to tell the Princess to rest. But his pain was great, and for a moment, he spoke not.
Yet, without a word, Celestia laid down by him, looking at his wound and the medic bag next to him. Sky clenched his teeth and folded in his wing, and stoically told the Princess he would be alright.
But Celestia shook her head and took the small bag with her magic, pulling out a needle and thread, before looking at Sky, and nodding. For a split second, his facade shattered, and his lip quivered.
Turning away from her, Sky lifted his wing for her, whereafter Celestia took his hoof, and quietly, yet sweetly said to squeeze her hoof should the pain be too much. He nodded, after which she began.
Not long after, Celestia had treated the wound, while Sky only squeezed a few times. She cleared up the supplies as Sky got up, but Celestia put her wing around him and said she would take the watch.
With a growing smile on his face, Sky slowly closed his eyes…
Secret
Celestia: "I do not know for how long I slept, but I startled awake when I heard Warden groaning in pain. When I got close, I saw a big wound under his wing, and offered to help, but he turned away."
C: "Sky said he was alright, even though we both knew he was not. It was the least I could do, so I insisted. Luckily, he agreed, even if reluctantly, so I took his hoof, and told him to squeeze it."
C: "I think I saw his lip quiver just before I began, but that aside; it did not take long to clean and stitch his wound. But then, as I put the needle back in the kit, he fell as he tried to stand."
C: "I caught him as he dropped to the floor. He told me to rest while he stood guard, but I did not agree. Both of us were tired and hurt, but he even more so, because of the wound beneath his wing."
C: "As kindly and politely as I could, I promised I would watch the cave, as it was clear he needed rest, even more than I. I folded my wing across his back, and we laid at the entrance for a while."
C: "I had many things I wanted to ask him. But the day neared, as the night passed, so my questions could wait. For now, he rested beneath my wing, for what must have been the first time in a while."
C: "I hugged him closer with my wing as he shut his eyes, smiling so sweetly… He fell asleep, not long after. I gently kissed him on his forehead, and wished him well. I do not know if he noticed."
A shy, light blush grew unto Celestia's face as she smiled, remembering the soldier who had rescued her. Risking life and limb, he protected her, yet she knew him not, until that moment in the tower.
C: "I shudder to imagine what would have happened had we not met. Even then, I wish our meeting had been in better circumstances. Stuck in a tower, a fleet of assassins after us, and a war going on."
C: "Our best and only hope is to stay together. I know not whither my family has gone nor wherefore the face of the Moon changed, but, with Sky next to me, I feel less afraid. I care for him dearly."
"I hope he knows… and feels the same."
Duty
Ever since the Lunar Incident, and the following discovery of the Solar Princess, unconscious, with her face stained with tears, we've had to deal with a lot - and I do mean a lot - of fallout.
For one, we had no idea what happened. A couple of weird gems on the ground, broken glass all over, and a head injury. So, we took her back to the Palace and found a safe room, far away from others.
The Doctor treated her as best she could, and told us to make sure she rested a while. It's been a few days, and I've been assigned to night watch, guarding her tower, but she hasn't woken up yet.
Fortunately, it's been quiet. The country doesn't know what happened or why the Moon has changed, but we promised to find out as soon as we could. But rumours started to spread, and fear grew.
Anytime there was a moment of quiet, I heard the other Guards talking about why she banished the Lunar Princess, and how much power it must have cost her. What would happen if she lost control?
I'm worried for her, especially since she's alone, and hurt. I've gone back to the location of the accident to stand guard, but since we found her, the gems we found laying around her have vanished.
Nopony went in or out, so I have no idea where those things are. But now, whenever I fly past her window, I've seen flashes of light in there. If it's those gems, goodness knows how they got there.
But during my flights around the tower, I've seen other Guards leave and head to a camp outside of town. A large group, growing every day. Now, I'm one of the only Guards left to guard the tower.
The plans I heard them discuss are grounds for high treason. I talked with the last few Tower Guards, and we knew the result. They assaulted the tower in the dead of night, trying to get to the Princess.
We stood our ground until the sun rose. By the grace of the Princesses themselves, I was unhurt. The others were not so lucky… This night, she woke up, but there is nopony else. Nopony but us.
I hope she trusts me. Neither of us has any other choice.
