honestly i'm all about the gayness of their relationship but it feels kinda queerbait-y to me. it's like... oh they love each other but no homo
No, I totally understand. Like both the boys going on about how their lives would suck without the other, hugging each other spontaneously, feeling heartbroken when they’re forcibly separated, etc., while simultaneously being all “oh man I love Rose I hope she notices me and also have I mentioned I am heterosexual today?”
The only thing that saves it for me is that it is a little obvious that Rowling never intended to portray it that way. This isn’t like the Sherlock fandom where everyone and their brother make cheeky winks towards the Johnlock pairing and then bluster on about how straight their characters are. Rowling (and her co-writers Jack Thorne and John Tiffany) is clearly just trying to portray a close friendship between straight characters. Are there moments that can be read as queer? Absolutely. Did they sit down and go “and here we should have them hug, it’ll make the gays wanna watch”? No, I don’t think so.
I dunno, I totally get if you feel like that though. It’s kinda bullshit that Rowling shied away from making a queer protagonist, but I genuinely think she hasn’t the faintest idea how to.
