It's worth a shot, though, and as you stagger-limp off Dave's lap and down into your garden atrium, you briefly consider dropping this idea altogether because it's actually pretty sappy now that you think about it.

But by the time you realize that, you're already halfway in the doorway. It smells like dirt in here and you can't help it, you have to at least check on them.

You knees buckle but you manage to remain upright by some miracle, still-frozen fingers tracing dead leaves and picking them away by instinct even though it's pretty pointless. Everything's already dead, so it doesn't matter.

Your breath stirs the fallen petals, dried and cracked and sad and you don't think you can take much more of the metaphor that's forming in your brain and won't stop so you spin on your heel to leave.

And then you see it.

It's not the healthiest flower you've ever raised by any means, but the color is vibrant and so, so red and you don't even know how it survived all these days without care but it did.

You pluck it out of the soil and don't think about what you're doing until you've managed to stumble back into the room where Dave is already nodding off and you smile a little- just a little, though, no need to go overboard here.

You plop your butt right back on his lap and tuck the tiny flower behind his ear right between his scalp and his shades.

He groans about how gay this is and you can't stop laughing.
